shame he uses Final Scratch rather than vinyl and CDs.

Go on then.. explain how that makes him less of a DJ :)

don't forget paul is mixing that for the radio listeners, which would normally mean a few thousand listeners, and he doesn't expect it to float around on the internet. people keep complaining about especially known dj's that they aren't special anymore.
it's ur own damn fault! u keep downloading or buying everything he produces. ofcourse it would seem then that he lost his touch....
just don't listen to new tracks for the next month, and download a set then. u'd feel like it was 2000 again, with all the new tunes u never heard before....

i feel the same way. paul's sets used to really take me somewhere. i also revisted old sets and there is a quality, a -something- that just isn't there anymore.

it seems that paul is playing a lot of anthems and crowd pleasers, hands in the air tracks. that's more tiesto and armin's style, and why i stopped listening to them.

i listen to a LOT of paul's sets, so i expect to be able to id anything he throws out there other than brand spanking new tracks. that doesn't bother me, but it's the lack of that special something that does.

i was really disappointed with his set at roxy 11/14. there were some great moments, but i felt a complete lack of flow and purpose. i'm not writing paul off yet, but am going to give it a break for a while and re-evaluate in 2004.

i hope he hasn't lost it.

you and i share the same view of the situation.

It's all true, he used to take you on a journey, now it's the same kick, same stuff, lack of originality like his essential mix on the weekend. I think paul has become a victim of his own success but I wait till he goes back to the old pvd style and till then I'll just keep listening to the old sets or I may dig out seven ways or otab.

the problem is, there was waaaaay more better pvd-releavant trance being made a few years back.. now lot of tracks blow.. thats why it seems like pvd aint using much fresh tracks.. cuz there arent any ! and also his artistic creativity has gone down a bit too cant deny that.. sometimes u gotta take some time off and look at yourself.. see what you lack.. and if youre touring 24/7 365, its hard to catch your own mistakes..

I feel much the same as Flo, but Mikey makes some good points.

Something is missing from Paul's performance in the last few months. He's recycling too many tracks, he's playing them in predictible order, and his current idea of a musical journey is starting out with two progressive tracks before randomly anthem-dropping, followed by a finish with Time of our Lives or Nothing But You. Come on Paul, get a clue. That's not the level of art you used to carry. I remember seeing him in March and he still had it. But from about July to now something has been off. The fact that many people have noticed it confirms that this isn't just a matter of opinion.

But he's also been touring nonstop, together with all the album promotion work, so perhaps he needs some time to reflect on where his sets are going. We all have periods where we become disillusioned with our work, and it's certainly possible this is the case with Paul.

I happen to think the Essential Mix was rather good, though admittedly not amazing, and the tracklist from Casino Berlin looks freaking amazing. It's also the case that he still mixes better than any DJ I know, save Marco V. So I have confidence that he's not lost the talents we admire and enjoy. I also expect some major changes from him between now and the Winter Music Conference, when things will begin to ramp towards summer again, starting the yearly cycle over again. But if he doesn't make a *major* shift by then he will also be in danger of slipping from my #1 spot.

I need not comment that Reflections was disappointing in terms of the work we expect from him, for a variety of reasons.

Still, Paul's lacking quality as of late is nowhere near the total uplifting garbage that Armin and company continue to hammer. Dutch euphoric trance is doomed to either merge with poptrance or collapse in a heap of disillusionment, and I fear the former is more likely. At least Tiesto is evolving his sound in a coherent direction, despite the fact that he still can't mix. Ferry, like the wise producer he is, began to diversify his sound years ago, and remains at the forefront of modern trance, but merely needs to avoid his tendancy for anthem-dropping behind the decks.

Where Vandit goes in the next few months will also play a role in Paul's fate. This could go either way. Introspecion shows great promise, for example. But they could update their website, ffs. It hasn't been changed in eons.

i know all of you probably see me as someone who s on pvd a lot. i don't know i think that i just started feeling what all of you are feeling now...but only a year or two ago. i loved the out there and back album, but after that...i felt like his sets went down hill and he didn't put much effort into production anymore...so its not like i have anything against pvd, just wished he would recapture the old pvd.
trancEyes22
maybe he's just stuck in a rut for awhile...but i def have noticed the change too. i'm not a die-hard PVD fan or anything, but you can tell the difference from his sets from a year-8 months ago to more recent ones.

i think its hard to be a dj....i mean, if you stay with the same stuff you always play, you get called boring, but if you change it up, people want you to go back to your old style. maybe paul needs some inspiration! :D

Yes, sadly the sound of trance has gotten more complex and PvD has not. Sad sad world isn't it?

Sorry, alot of you know I absolutely despise PvD but I just had to respond to this comment...I found it too funny not to. :p

Hm I wonder what you guys mean when saying "xyz (cause the same point is made for other dj's) has lost it!"

What exactely is "it" ? Talent? IMO talent, the art of being a world-class dj with everything it takes (combining technical skills with musical understanding and the reading of the crowd) is a timeless gift and can't be simply lost, let alone within a few months. So what CAN be lost is ambition and/or inspiration. This can stem from a too-busy schedule which leads to a sort of breakdown every normal human being under constant pressure might experience, or the generaly feeling of being fed up with what you do. Which sometimes is irreversible :nervous:

good point,

for a dj who plays the number of sets he does it is expected that you will play a similar set to the one you played a few days earlyer

after all a dj plays for the crowd their on the night, not for the people who download the sets
