Another Dream Shattered by Banks

I just read the following article courtesy of the Toronto Star:

Article

I found this story completly outragous and a warning to all people. What happened to this man and his partner is ridiculos. I am Canadian, born and raised (single, white male) but tryed to but myself in this man's shoes and can only imagine the sense of humiliation and fustration he must of gone through as a landed immigrant trying to get a positive venture of the ground.

Now, whether it had anything to do with his Afghan ethnicity can probably be argued either way and I am not convinced that that was the reason, but as a person...any person.....this is a troubling account of how easy one can find huge trouble because of our banks growing incopetence and lack of sensable conduct for it's customers.

These men should be FULLY compensated by the bank.........period!!!!!

I work for TD and I can say from my own personal experiences that it appears that staff at the branch level are often idiots who work casually and rarely display any knowledge for what they are doing. This is not to say that they are ALL like that and my appologies if I offended any branch employees here, but I speak from my own observations.

This guy should consider taking his case directly to the Ombudsperson since this type of behaviour is obviously unacceptable. It would be too quick to point to "race" as being the determining factor for his treatment since there is no direct evidence given in the article to suggest it. I would think that would be incredibly strange as well seeing as how the branch was located at the Scarborough Town Center - one of the most ethnically diverse places in this city.

Hopefully he can win his case. By bringing matters like this to the media it helps to pressure on the corporations to try and be accountable for their actions.

i can vouch for this. there are a lot of idiots that work in the branch. i love my bank (Royal Bank) but i hate the people they hire to work at the branches. i mean they just have no clue and they are rude about it. i hardly ever need to go to the teller or information desk but everytime i go i dread it because i don't know what sort of lameness i'm going to have to deal with. i will stick with internet banking and telephone service for now. did you know you can even open a bank account on line without ever stepping into a branch?

but this story is still scary in the fact that it took just one person not knowing the technology and ing up the rest of your life. same goes for this summer's hospital mistakes where the workers didn't fill the bottles with the right disinfectant. $100 bills and and counterfeit money is easy to tell by touch and by certain other characteristics not only the UV thing. why weren't these people trained? ray was quickly trained at work for that sort of stuff. and these people are supposed to work at a bank.

No Kidding.........but it's infinitely worse because this dolt posing as a trusted bank associate didn't call in the dogs alone but called in the branch management!!!!????

You would think by all normal logic that even if an ID error was made on the bills at the counter level, that calling in the "experienced" management would avert such a costly and reckless error. If you can't even trust those that are in charge of running the branch......I cringe at the incompetency of those below them.

Also: I have never been penalized personally as I am rather meticulous with my finances however I've seen friends and collegues fined and fee'd heavily for simple errors of late payments and/or minor NSF problems literally in the pennies.

I find it HIGHLY insulting and unjust that banks greedily reap in billions through these practices yet they become ghosts when mistakes on their end occur...leaving the poor individuals to pick up the pieces or try to fight the giants themselves.

I think anyone here would excuse the banks for occasional mistakes if only they would own up to them as they force us to with their countless fees and penalties.

well overall, i haven't had the smoothest ride with TD. I'm with CIBC and i have no problems.

I closed both my TD and visa accounts with TD. i was trying them out for the summer. They are seem to lack profesioal customer service specially with a bussiness such as a bank, professionalizm is everything. I get treated like cuz i'm a student and i've noticed it more than one occasion. My branch was the one at warden and sheppard... One of the newer ones in Scarborough.

either way: i've been wtih cibc since i was 12 and i'll continue to put my money there.

Wow....that's just....wrong...

I've sent an email to the lawyer (at least I think it's him) asking if there was anything we could do.

I got an auto response back that he's on holidays so we'll see if he replies in the New Year...
