Im one of few of my friends who really likes trance...but they always ask me:

"So your tiesto or whatever gets paid all that money to match a beat and turn knobs?"

and i say its more then that

but to you...what makes your favourite DJ so awesome and skilled enough to make lots of money?

Just out of curiosity, how much does the #1 DJ of the year get paid?
Sorry if it's off subject.

That's easy :) First of what is all this djing about : the dj want entertain ppl at the club. Ok everyone can do beat match, but a dj can give so a feeling with his style, track selection, mixing, etc.
A good dj taking care of the ppl at the club, checking their reactions to the songs he play, if they are a bit tired after 40 min of trance, he plays something slower, then some other music style, etc. So the whole sets have a "wave", which make a good dj sets danceable / listenable. IMHO who can do ALL these things is a DJ.

The top djs have a so called "NAME", so ppl will go to that event where that dj is playing. Lots of ppl = lots of imcome = the dj get lots of money.

Ok, maybe i am not the #1 fan of Tiesto, but if you look at the top 10 in the djmag list, they you can see : those djs spent ages to learn mixing, making productions, etc. After all the hard work they become famous. Famous = he can ask lot of money for one event.
Unreal
A Dj also shoot magical records out his ass to rain on all the little trancites.

A dj's succes is based on his productions most of the time i guess.

bah! you beat me to it :D

true. a lot of the time/most of the time, dj's get exposure from their productions. some will fail miserably at mixing them, while others will gain more exposure. and others will get the exposure, forget the mixing, and get their sound engineers to complete their tracks.

JonO is the exception that proves the hypothesis.

curious

does a producer have to be a DJ to get a well known name?
