Swollen Glands

Has anyone ever had this before? I don't even know if that's what I have, but I'm assuming it is.
At first I had 2 small inflamations covered with some white substance on either side of the begining of my throat (sorry, don't know the medical term). I noticed them on Saturday. On Monday I went to the doctor and he prescribed penecillin.
I was bed ridden for sunday, monday, and tuesday with this plus fever, aches and pains, ear aches, headaches, and EXTREME pain when trying to swallow (liquids or solids), or talking.
Today, I feel much better, but I took a look at the inflamations again and they have swelled up to the size of small grapes (this is the only thing I can compare it to. Don't get vivid mental images of no space at all to swallow, there's ample space, but it has swelled up to at least 3x it's original size). Now, it doesn't hurt to swallow or talk anymore. I have difficulty swallowing and talking, but it doesn't hurt . I have no fever or cold symptoms anymore.
I know you're going to say, "go to the doctor again", which I just did, but wait was 3 hours, and I have family over, so I couldn't do it. I have also been taking the penecillin religiously (4 times a day).
Are these infact swollen glands or something worse? |

My friend it sounds like you have a classic case of Strep throat. It is a bacterial infection and therefore warrants the use of penicillin. However, it takes some time to get over the infection even if you are on penicillin.
If you check the back of your throat, with a flash light against the mirror, and you still notice the white spots (which are essentially a slew of streptococal and immune cells = puss) so should follow up with your physician. There are more prevelent known strains of penicillin resistant streptococus floating around, which could complicate things in your case (i.e. having to change to a different antibiotic).
Also, having swollen glands is a good sign, your immune system is fighting! If they get too big so that you have a hard time eating or even breathing, then you should seak medical attention straight away.
I hope I've explained this well enough! It has been 3 years since I graduated!!
Cheers,
itikia
PS> lots of rest and fluid is also the key to getting better faster.. |

Listen to Dr. Fist, he knows his . If you have any trouble breathing, meaning that if the swelling gets so bad you are having trouble maintaining your airway...better safe than sorry and seek medical attention immediately! |

all i know is: Pierre sick ---> go to dad. Dad says "go to doctor.. can't give u drung without Rx"
Pierre go to doctor, get Rx, give to dad, dad has Rx ready before Rx gets there.. Pierre refuses to take meds, till he can't sleep anymore, then dad wakes up, gives Pierre meds and Pierre sleeps like a baby. wakes up thanks dad for being a kick ass pharmacist. |

I feel your pain Highroller... Strep Throat is MY BABY... im averaging getting it about 3 times a year now!! Im so used to it now, that the EXTREME PAIN no longer surprises me, but still hurts like a mother******...
I just got over the worst case of Strep ive ever had 4 weeks ago, so i think im safe for getting it till atleast mid march or april i hope! hahaha... dude, im sending my christmas wishes to ya, heoping ya get over this BITCH of a bacteria!!
thats no way to be on xmas!!
Yes, lots of fluids especially (personnally, i like da Applejuice) and rest helps ;)
theres a green thropat spray that does an "semi-okay" job at numbing ur throat... it never kills all the pain strep brings... but if the sore throat comes back, buy some of that .....or get the doctor to prescribe some Tantum Babble (its a green fluid u gargle, its decent too)
Aight dude, back to xmas holidaying... cheers and i hope u feel better man....
Peace |
