Movie: Thirteen
Went to see "Thirteen" last night with the family. I have a number of comments, of course, and will try to keep myself from following tangents.
Thirteen was about a girl who wants to be (and later stay) popular by befriending a popular student. Proving herself popular begins with theft and soon expands to include sex, drugs, piercings, and especially lies.
This is not a date movie. This is not a buddy flick. In fact, think "a really depressing Schindler's List" and you'll get the idea of what kind of mindset you need to be in to see it.
We went to see it because we have a fifteen year old in the house. As a conversation starter, it is excellent.
The technical aspects of the film were of course impressive. The camera work was golden. Susan commented that it seemed like four different camerapersons were involved, and I think this may as well be the case. The cameras did excellent work capturing the various moods and feelings in the movie. The sound design (as much as I could hear, it wasn't a modern theatre) was also quite excellent.
Personally, I was feeling like quite a hack as a writer when I left the movie theatre, thinking that if a thirteen year-old could do that, how could I ever hope to come close. Later I read that while it is her story, the writing credit was more for the help she gave with the dialogue, so the hack feeling is receding.
The movie was excellent in that it has social importance (this is happening, people. Yes, even this young), it was excellent from a technical standpoint, and the acting was incredible. I just... miss friendly movies, like Three Amigos. Ah, well.
Final score: one barrel, half filled with monkeys.

Hi
I saw the movie. It's nothing compared with my life. I do all of that and more. Did you see the Paris Hilton sex video tape? I have a couple, a lot like hers. What's wrong with ahveing some fun? what's wrong with drugs and sex? Adults do it too!

This movie made my life so much better, i feel that after watching this movie i should stop with the lies and drugs and sex... i think that it made me see what it was really doing to my family. I'm glad someone gave themselves the time to make such a great movie!...Even though it wasn't like the movies that i normally watch and enjoy I Loved it cause it was much the same as my life! Thanx so much you have changed my life! I give it 20 stars!

To Ashen... I probably should have mentioned i'm a guy. And no, I don't live in a nice little secluded part of Australia, my suburb has some of the biggest crime in Melbourne. I'm surrounded by drugs, and sure, i'm involved with it, but it's so easy to just take social drugs and not get involved with harder drugs. But I can see why young people are turning to illegal drugs, because it is so much easier to access an illegal drug. You can buy Cannabis in the school yard, which is a lot easier than trying to buy alcohol. I guess I will have to watch the movie to understand it. I hope things are going well for you in the U.K.... Jackson :)

To the gurl from Australia, who thinks that it's not that hard to get involved in hard drugs, you're SO wrong! You're just as bad as the adults who refuse to see it =/ maybe you live in a nice secluded part of Auzzie, but where I live there are ELEVEN yr olds running round the street doing drugs, hash, etc by the time they're 13, they're experimenting with hard drugs such as heroin and/or cocaine.. some of them even fall into the harder drugs earlier than that.
I haven't seen Thirteen yet, but I can't wait.. Is it out in Enland yet?? I haven't seen it advertised =(

| I downloaded a VHS-Screener a while ago, but I haven't seen it yet. I'll wait til my ex-girlfriend comes over, cause I told her about it when we still were together, and she wanted to see it too, so she's gonna come here some day and we'll watch it. |

Nikki Reed (Evie Zamora in this movie), started writing the screenplay when she was thirteen. Catherine Hardwicke (production designer Three Kings, Vanilla Sky & Director of Thirteen) re-wrote it for the movie. I remember watching the movie and thinking "arent those girls a bit young for all that stuff to happen?" Then thinking back if thats how things were when I was that age and it did definitly (they were in the 8th grade). Thats what makes it so real.
Great movie. May be a horror to many parents, but it shows the side of adolescent girls that they may stay blind or ignorant of if it wasnt in thier faces.
