Problems with recording in soundforge

I am trying to record my mixes using Soundforge on a SoundBlaster Live soundcard. I made sure everything was connected right: I have an RCA to stereo miniplug splitter which is connected to the line in port on the soundcard.

When i am trying to record, the signal seems to be too soft for the program to pick up anything. I tried adjusting the volumes in my soundcard settings but that did not do anything useful. Finally, I clicked DC offset but that only boosted the sound coming out of the right channel. I want sound in both left and right channel!!! anyone know how to fix this?

Well i figured out my problem and it was faulty RCA cables. One more question though.. i've been searching for the answer for a while. IN soundforge, what tool do I use to get rid of the background noise when recording from vinyl? I tried noise gate but it doesn't seem very effective.

hmm you are getting background noise when recording vinyl? that's really weird, you should not be getting any at all.

that hiss you might hear at the very beginning of the record is normal, as far as i know all my records also seem to have poor quality at the very very beginning. i'm not sure if this is your problem, of course.

if you mean getting rid of pops, i have no idea how to fix that, besides re-recording the sound and editing. but chances are you would have that same pop there, and you couldn't really do this if you recorded a whole set.

if you are getting some major "background noise" as you call it, maybe it's your mixer, and check the frequencies that you are recording at. (make sure it's set to record off soundcard)

hope that helped a bit

Depends what type of noise you're talking about.

If you've got a steady hum, maybe your earthing is wrong.

If you wanna remove some clicks and pops, try something like:
Waves Restoration Bundle (expensive but good)
Pinnacle / Steinberg Clean (much cheaper, but not as good IMO)

If you want to remove background noise then you probably need tool that can take a noise print and use that to reduce the noise from the rest of the recording, for example:
Sony (formerly Sonic Foundry) Noise Reduction 2
