I used the melody from this old R&B song to make a trance song... Not the first time the melody was sampled, but I think I did it justice. Have a listen...

(WMA version 9 decoder required)

It's at the bottom of the list

Tell me what you think, and how I can improve. Positive and negative opinions welcome.

UPDATE: added a bassline. it's now the one second to last on the list. (not the "OLD" one)

Hey man, how long have you been producing for? The song sounds like it needs some work in some areas. First of all, I was unable to hear any bassline which tends to make a mix sound dry, so that is something to work on. Secondly, I think that some experimentation and practise with synth programming could help. Also, at times, the melody seems out of tune.

Your percussion work is quite good though and is probably the stronger part of the track.

I hope you take this a constructive criticism, but it sounds like you have not been producing for a long period. I hope we are able to help you. I think that the bassline is the first area that needs to be addressed.

i felt the same about the lack of a bassline... especially in the beginngn and after 4:25.. I'll make some changes.

I've been producing for ... 6 motnhs now... started with making some hip-hop instrumentals for a few friends. It was always easier to make hip hop than it was to make trance... This is, I think, my 2nd or 3rd trance tune, and quite embarassingly, my best ;)

Anyways... Thanks for listening and posting.

Hey there,

You have some nice sounds going on there and the sound is really crisp which is good... something I have trouble achieving.

That lack of bassline is what ultimately let's this track down the most along with a few issues in the melody. You do seem to have some good ideas behind the whole thing though and I think that you will probably know what to do with this track to make it sound better.

Keep 'em comming as it's always cool to hear new ideas.

Cheers

i've updated it with a bassline. check the original post. thanks for listening :)

Yeah man, that's a bit better. Don't forget though, the bassline needs to go in with the melody as well, just loud enough so that you can feel it but no so loud that it stands out alongside, or over the top of the melody.
