I brought Steve Porter into town for NYE up here, and after our 16th hour of straight new years partying we started talking some production. My memory is a little vague, but to summarize a few things he told me:
-When it comes to bass, if it sounds right, it is right. Don't rely on imaging to let you know if your frequencies are where they are supposed to be or whatnot; a lot of the times you'll have a lot of notes that are louder than the other ones in order to make them sound better on a big system.
-Most of his awesome synth sounds sound pretty raw from the start and get to be as good as they are via careful effects and mainly EQ'ing.
That's all I can remember actually, oh well =P |

I find it funny how we all take this stuff quite seriously, cos when I ask pros for tips I get 'Just about with the settings'
My SAE tutor once said 'You dont wanna know the math, thats for the engineers, just about with the setting till you think it sounds good. If your doing dance music, just add a load of reverb':toothless |

Are you saying he sculpts the sounds with EQ (boosting here and there to create the sound) or "makes them sit" with EQ, big difference, just wondering? : ) |

PAUL WHITE - Sound On Sound magazine guru words :
"First your track must sound good then you add effects and result is MASSIVE! Not vica versa :) The effects are like bonuses not the main part :)"

That is such a crap way of doing things, how would you know its gonna sound better with alot of reverb on the snare, filter modulation on the bassline.
No, Im sorry there is things you need to do in the creativity duration that you would miss if you left it all till after the track.
I dunno how ppl could do it. |

He was talking about shaping the sound completely with EQ'ing. |
