We will see something new happen. The guvernment has been grabbing DJs all the time. After it closes, maybe independent promoters will emerge, different clubs will enter the game - goodbye to the status quo!

Still...the Guvernment is Toronto's biggest club...I mean in popularity, size and international recognition. It would be a major blow if it closed...where else could we cram thousands of people to see Tiesto, PvD, etc, etc? The Docks is ok. I've never been to Viva or System, but aren't they kinda small compared to the Guv?

What you're forgetting is that about half of the people that attend guvernment special events are its regular saturday crowd, people that just like hype and big events, and those reached by the more extensive advertising of the party (you don't see the promotion of regular spin saturdays much), etc.. so, as we've seen in the case of Picotto at System, it's not hard at all to move to other venues.

Would you guys please stop bitching about the sound system in guv, that phazon is pumping. Whats wrong with your ears?

there's nothing wrong with my ears. The phazon is pumpin' but stand in different spots and you can hear that the sound needs a little work. I'm not sayin it's bad, cuz if you find the right spot then it's awesome, and even in the bad spots its not ear-bleeding horrible, but they could fix it up. It's still my fav club tho.

Over all it's a freakin great system. It is distorted in some spots though. The high may be a little to high. Might just be were I was standing though.

The only reason one complains of the Guv is the crowd.....its that simple. The regular Saturday night clientele can be scary at times, and they ram the place to the every major party. I think if the Guv controlled the capacity, hiked up the price on Spin Saturdays to $20 they'd still profit considerably and they'd have a happy crowd who couldnt find one thing wrong with the place. I could be wrong. But like Chris said above.....if you dont like The Guv, dont bitch about it, and even better.....dont go.

i completly agree, i would definatly pay more if it was less rammed! thats my biggest problem with the guv. but you just cant beat the Dj lineups they get. they are too good. I dont really go to any other clubs because the guv(on special nights) provides me with awsome tunes.

and as for the sound system, it does need a little work. there is just too much base, and it often drowns out the vocals and such. they have gotten better though.

I think when oakey's heniken tour rolled into town, and those guys were able to tune it how they wanted (in the kool haus) it sounded perfect.

With respect to anyone who doesn't like the Guvernment. The Guv ing rocks!!!! This is the best major club in North America. I would be so depressed if it closed. I have met some of the coolest people, seen some of the most awesome shows, and got to hang with huge crowds of cheering clubbers. There is nothing on this continent like this place. I'd cry if it closed :(

I returned to the Guv for the first time in about 4 years on new years and I was very dissapointed with the music. Phazon or no phazon, it sounded like crap... way too much bass and it sounded like it needed to be tweaked by someone who knows what they are doing. Anybody who partied at Twilo back in the day can tell you just how crisp the phazon system can be. Also, I used to respect Mark Oliver as a Dj, but his new years set is giving me second thoughts... His style was all over the place and his track selection seemed random at best. He tried mixing progressive tracks into trance into hard house and then back again without any type of logical progression to the tracks he was using to bridge the gap. I would call his set uninspired at best.

Furthermore, Guv could do alot better than ramming Mark Oliver down your throat every weekend... They do bring in some talent, but its nowhere near what they are capable of. A club of that size should be bringing in top Dj's every weekend and could still charge a max of $25 at the door, but they choose to soak everyone cause they know people are still willing to pay. If Boa can bring in consistent talent then it may force Guv to do more of the same but at reasonable price... It sickens me the number of people who are willing to pay $50 to see Oakenfold spin for 2 hours when the club is rammed to the gills. His sets almost always suck live, and no Dj is worth that kind of money if you ask me.

Sorry for the venting, but I hate watching clubs operate with the sole purpose of making as much money as possible and not offering a worthwhile experience to their patrons.

"The best major club in North America"

What do you base this on? Its certainly one of the biggest, but it lost its lustre along time ago...

I will admit that when the people at the Guv are at their coolest, its hard to beat in that department (at least a while back it used to be like that... not sure anymore)

Mother,

I have been to every club you list in your sig in SF, NYC, and Giant in LA. I've also been to clubs in Chicago. I rate a club by the line-up they get, the quality of the sound, the "easy-to-hang-around-ness" of the folks in the club, and decor. The Guv/Koolhaus megaplex wins hands down for me. I'd like to know what you think is the best club in North America. It would give me some idea of what your preferences are. Please note I say best club in North America. I will agree with you there are better clubs in Europe. I will also say CrobarNYC is frickin awesome too, but I still think Guv is the best of the biggest.
