ok guys, i have to do a video project for my literature class. group project, so im not alone, but the rest of the group is even more clueless than i am on the matter of video recording/editting. well, not really recording or editting, but what goes in between. i wrote the script, have the props, everything is set up. the problem is, we have a digital camera with its USB cord missing (owner is damn careless) which i think would be the way to transfer the video data to the computer. its not a simple USB cable, but rather one point is USB and the other (which is plugged into the camera) is a rather weird shape. we have the video editting software necessary to compile and polish the project once we have it on the computer, but we still need to record and transfer.

now, again, i know nothing about video, but if i have a video card with S-video out and hook it up to a TV, is there any way to record what is being played on the TV and save it to my hard drive? if so, id really appreciate it if you could tell me the software id need, cabling, and the procedure in general. if this can be done, we could just as well film it on a normal video tape, and then transfer it to the PC for editting. we didnt want to do some cheap video project where we would just record one scene behind the other, plus its essential to the script we use certain effects.

its a spoof kind of thing, as the teacher left it open to our decision what we were going to make, so i wrote a script for one of those dating service videos, where an applicant send in a video with information about themself and other things. in this one, i feature a rich, self centered guy with a bunch of weird friends. the friends do appearances and interviews talking about the subject, so the viewer can get a full perspective on this elligible bachelor. one of them is a puerto rican pimp and drug smuggler, the other is Miami's biggest player, etc. we got a 2003 Porsche Boxster S for a car scene, pimp clothes for the full pimp effect, and even groupies. at all this, i wrote the entire script not knowing how exactly i was going to pll this off, so a little help would be very much appreciated. i know there are some great filmmakers in hiding here on TA, so spill the beans. if you think i have any other better alternatives, by all means, go ahead.

First off, let's just deal with the cable. Most digital cameras use a firewire not usb, but i know a few older ones that do. What ever the case, you need to buy it and most likely its a speciality part that can only be obtained from the manufacture or an authorized dealer. Using s-video cable would only make sense if u had a video card with that type of plug and the camera could be directly plugged in.

Most digital camera-type devices that connect via USB will use the normal-sized USB plug for the computer's end, and a scaled-down plug for the camera's end. Perhaps that's what you mean about the strange shape?

If that's not it, firewire (i.e. IEEE 1394) has plugs shaped like Norman windows, except instead of a hemisphere you have a triangle.

its USB, unless the manual is trying to bull me :D

i think it has the scaled down end as tranc3 suggests. ill snap a quick pic of the plug tomorrow or get a picture of a similar one.

and no, what i meant with S-video is:

can i plug it into the TV, and record whats being played on the TV onto my hard drive. for example, im playing a VHS tape on my TV, can i record from the TV into my PC?

if anyone has any other suggestions, im open.

Don't send the letter....oh wait, it isn't about that.

Now, im to lazy to read all that but basically if you want to edit video, you have to get a video editing card with firewire connections for you computer. There is no other way to get good results (forget the USB ). The video editing cards are not expensive. You usually get some ok editing software with the card. The rest is explained in the manual...
