How many VSTi's like Superwave, etc.. can everybody here get with a recent Pentium 4?

Hi,
Anybody who can give me an indication of how many VSTi's + effects and audio tracks you can get with something like a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4.
I would work in Cubase SX 2. The kind of VSTi's I would like to use are those good for trance, like those from Native Instruments, Linplug Albino, Superwave (how CPU intensive it that one?!), Z3ta+, etc.. then add the necessary effects in Cubase and use only a couple of audio tracks for mainly the vocals and perhaps mixing down some VSTi tracks etc.. Also, is it true that even with a recent CPU, one instance of something like Superwave P8/Peformer will eat up 30% CPU when you play 8 notes (like when you play a 4-note chord that still have some release time going when you already start playing the next 4-note chord, this will eat up 8 notes I believe). On the other hand I have heard some impressive results from Reason users. Does something like Reason perhaps use less CPU then when you use lots of different VSTi's to make a production? Actually I would like to combine various VSTi's with Reason in Cubase SX 2 if that is possible.
I think my main question is if with a recent CPU like a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4, it is possible to make a complete (vocal trance) production like Paul van Dyk, DJ Sammy, etc.. with just VSTi's and some effects and some audio tracks, or will you still need hardware synths for that?!
It would perhaps be best if everybody can post a link to a good, ready-for-release (vocal trance) song he has made with only VSTi's and mention which and how many instances of VSTi's, effects and audio tracks you have used and which PC setup you use?! I think if everybody could do this this would give a good idea if it is nowadays really possible to make full productions with only VSTi's?!
Thanks in advance for all good feedback?!
Mike. |

i can happily run 3xVAZ with unison on, along with a 5 pro-53 and at least 1 v-station and 2 fm7 on a p4 2.56ghz + 512mb ram, thats how many vsti's i had running in my last tune anyway in fruityloops. |

Well Superwave is a CPU eater, after all it's a synth-edit synth :)
A typical setup for me would be:
3x z3ta+ (4x polyphony or so, the z3 is the master of CPU eaters :) )
3x V-station
1x Superwave
2x Pro 53
This is pushing my computer to the limit (2.4ghz P4, 512mb DDR RAM :) )
Let's say I was running all same synths, then I could probably get 5x z3ta+ or 20x V-station or 6x Superwave P8 (And I mean that all instances would be playing at the same time)
Oh, and BTW. I can max out my CPU usage by playing a 12 note chord with the first patch in Z3ta+ :D |

Actually, how can you know when you have reached the limit or your CPU when adding softsynths, effects, etc..? Can Cubase SX tell you this accurately? Any other reliable programs that can tell you how much CPU you are really using?! How do you people deal with this?
What I would really like to know if it is possible to create big-sounding productions with just softsynths on a recent CPU, or will you need hardware synths for that? Perhaps people can post links to songs they have made with just softsynths and tell which softsynths (and how many instances) and effects they have used and what there CPU setup is. That way I can have a better idea of what is possible with just using softsynths. Could everybody please do this? I think this info would be usefull to everybody!
Thanks in advance! |

In Cubase, press F12 and the VST Performance window will pop up showing you how much CPU your plugins are munching. I don't really have any problems with CPU and I run a pentium 1.8. Got 512 MB RAM and never had any problems with that either. I don't use a lot of CPU munchers though, mainly 3-4 instances of Atmosphere which is very CPU friendly, 1 Pro-53 and maybe an ABL plus a few plugins, but not many. Just a delay and reverb on the send, a distortion on some inserts and some master compression. |

I have a p4 2.66 ghz with 2 gig ram, and if i wonted to make a identical copy or any remix of any song that's out there it's plenty of power. And that's only using vsti instruments not hardware synths. You said you're gonna use cubase sx. That software has offline processing and now they implemented a freeze function. I use it all the time, my cpu dosn't go past 50% mark eaven when i have whole bunch of tracks and effects running.. You have to know the software you're using and there are so many things you can do to get around the "not enough cpu power" problem. Before i use to have a 1.3 gig cpu with 512 megs of ram, and i can still make the same song as i do on my 2.6 but it will take some more time and little off line processing to get the same track done. |
