"North Korea has launched a nationwide anti-smoking campaign after its leader Kim Jong-il reportedly quit the habit and called on his people to follow suit.

Reports in the South Korean media said Kim recently singled out smokers as one of the "three main fools of the 21st century"(funny that he should make mention of fools), along with those who are ignorant about computers and music.

North Korean television has carried slogans and programmes telling people how harmful cigarette smoking can be to their health.

"Let's quit smoking and contribute in good health to the building of a powerful nation," Choe Ong-ju, the North's chief public hygiene inspector, urged viewers.

South Korean TV quoted experts on the North as saying that although there are no accurate statistics, an estimated 40 per cent of the North's 22 million people smoke cigarettes, one of the highest rates in the world.

Unconfirmed reports have circulated in the Japanese press that Kim suffered a prolonged bout of ill health in late 2003. The North Korean media gave no coverage to his activities for several weeks between October and December."

Maybe he should give up those nukes to feed his people while on his smoking crusade as well, after all Ghaddafi isn't doing too bad now. Kim's Napoleonic complex however keeps him from realizing that in giving up the weapons the U.S. has no rationale to attack, besides Japan, China and certainly South Korea wouldn't care for any of that. Instead he continues to hold the region hostage to collect his big payout that will probably never benefit the people because that is the way slimeballs like Kim functions.

Now normally I wouldn't wish death on someone being that it is plain disgusting but when it comes to Kimie boy he should have continued on his path of ill health, the world would be on its way to being a bit better with one less tyranical, mercurial maniacal scum. Aah democracy gotta love it, if I was in North Korea I would have been taken to a prison camp as well as my family, for writing this about him :haha: Amazing that no one is protesting this guy and what he is doing in Asia, imagine the uproar if America said it would use nukes on North Korea if they don't give up the weapons, instead Kim has them ready to launch at South Korea and Japan and they buy his garbage story of nuclear deterrent. Maybe the South Koreans should realize that the only unification will be under Kim Jong-Il, not under a democratic, free and fair Korean Republic;)

He's slightly cooperating now. I believe couple of inspectors were allowed to visit Youngbyon the other day.

NK is also dabbing in capitalism. Right now, that's causing more unrest in economy than helping now. (too many unemployed)

Still, Kim may be just playing for concessions.

I guess homosexuality is still OK with Kim Jong-Il though...

Kim's a friggin' menace to the world and needs to be overthrown or assasinated for the good of mankind.:whip:

NYCTrancefan...all good points made. I couldnt say it better myself. But, what would happen if Kim died? Just like his father, there is probably someone else to take over. Unless we go in militarily, there is no way that the people will rise up, b/c they know nothing of the outside world, about freedom, all they know is what their government tells. No wonder North Korea is listed as #1 as the country with the least freedom. People had more freedom under saddam than they do under Kim Jong-il.

BUt it really striked me how much power he holds. its absolute. He quits smoking, and just because of that, he says everyone else should to, probably resulting in more deportations to "reeducation camps" where they are "reeducated" back into "society". Maybe if it was like that here, bush would say, I like to eat texas beef, therefore nobody else can eat any other beef unless its from texas, or i send away to hard labor in alaska.

Like NYCTRAnce said, why are they worrying about people quitting smoking, and not worrying about the millions who are malnurished and starving to death, b/c they want to spend billions in nucleur weapons research, when the people behind the nation are starving to death for just so they can have nucleur weapons. anyways, whats the threat to North Korea? They have no enemy....except the USA. Actually the government created the USA as an enemy, just so they have a united cause to fight, keeping support for the government, much like it is in IRan.

Excellent summation, people should be protesting in that part of the world to have this guy give up his weapons. He knows that the U.S. isn't going to attack him unless he chooses to do something that would lead to WWIII like launch an invasion of South Korea. None of these things will happen however because the stakes are too high. Instead like the dictatorial gangster that he is, blackmail has worked for him before, so he is trying it again to get what he wants to maintain a zombie society. In one interview I saw with a North Korean refugee this is a remark about Kim's policy on children "The moment a child utters a word they start him on ideological training," one refugee says. "So they can't think for themselves." Check out http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/s...a/thestory.html provides a limited insight into North Korea.

As for Iran's leadership:stongue: I loathe the hardline clerics that continue to jail students and utilize the sour relationship with the U.S. to maintain their own political control, another recent post in here covers their brutality. All these things are turning me into a hardcore activist. My mission to rid the world of developing world dictators. Hard yes but oh well.

I wonder why people didnt protest saddam hussein or are not protesting whats going on in libya, with kodavi. The only thing people want to protest is the USA. I bet if North DID attack SOuth Korea, and the USA jumped in to protect, they'de still protest the USA. the hardliners.

But ill join you in your radical activism of third world dictatorships and the garbage that comes from them. I see North Korea as 10th world to me.

A little interesting thing. If you look at a map of the world, like a sat. picture of nighttime. and you see all the cities, and the lights they are making from space. look at korea. look at the well-lit south, and look at the north, which is not lit at all, except for Pyongyang.

Warning - large image. (but very cool). North Korea is as dark as the middle of Africa.
