remove search engine hijack

every now and then i get my default search engine hijacked. The one i'm talking about is when you type something into the "address bar", not a web address but a search query, in Internet Explorer and, by default, it takes you to the msn search engine results. unfortunately, i went to a site which changed my default search engine to "search-and-find.com". It somehow did this by exploting a java bug in internet explorer. I've had this done before with "internet optimzer" but i was able to remove that and reset the search engine.

So, my question is, does anyone know of any registry mods that i can do or settings that i can change in order to reset the serach engine?

Try deleting all temporary internet files and cookies. Perhaps you should also clear your history.

Finally go to internet options and check "do not search from the adress bar".

Good luck!

This is exactly why you should not use internet explorer. Why should a internet site be able to remotly change your computer settings?

Does no one else see the HUGE security hole that this produces. I suggest you download mozilla or firebird. http://www.mozilla.org/

I don't know which particular Registry key it is, but if you use Ad-Aware, it will de-activate the lock and dump the spyware. Find it on Major Geeks

I had the exact same thing happen to me.

Yes, this is usually a spyware/adware/monitorware problem. KazAa??
In terms of alternate browsers I like Opera. Mozilla is too buggy in my experiences...but that was also a long time ago. I'd say research cause all browsers are going to offer you some kind of stablility that another wont.

In terms of removers I use spybot and spy sweeper. Helps to have Norton as well...
