yes, the clitoris does play a huge role in stimulation and that's why some recommend missionary position lobe to lobe - stimulate her clitoris with your pubic hair.
and if there wasn't much pleasure in sex, we wouldn't be where we are now... it's instinctive and it's survival of the fittest - you don't like intercourse? you don't get into the gene pool, simple as that. |

There is no reason why ejaculation couldn't ocur without the other elements of an orgasm. Therefore to say that the purpose of the male orgasm is ejaculation is incorrect. I would separate the ejaculation and the orgasm and ask, what the purpose of the other elements of an orgasm are (given that the purpose of the ejaculatory part is obvious). Part of the reason that Sexual Desire is inherent in the human psyche is because of the payoff of orgasm. The fact, that apart from being a spasmic contraction of muscles it is also enjoyable. The emotional/physical pleasure one gets from sex reinforces the desire to have sex, and encourages you to do it more often. As frequency of intercourse increases so does the chance f impregnation and one's genes being passed on to the next generation... Apart from that, as someone already mentioned, the muscular contractions of the female orgasm cause the cervix to dip into the pool of deposited semen in the vagina, thus increasing chances of conception. |

Ok thanks to all those who have replied, there are 2 reasonable explanations: the physical and the psychological/instinct one, being the latest the most convincing one.
Summary:
Male orgasm is necessary for a pregnancy to occur.
Female orgasm is not necessary for a pregnancy to occur.
Female and male orgasms are necessary for the continuity of human procreation.
However, what are the reasonable explanations to these strange facts about the female orgasm?:
- It is more intense than the male one
- It is more difficult to reach than the male one / Some women have never reached it
- Some women have reached “multi-orgasms” |

This comes down to the difference b/w male and female sexuality. An analogy can be drawn to other mammals (and such comparison is expedient as these things evolved when humans existed in very primitive social groups). For many larger mammals, the female has the role of rearing the children and often providing for the group. The role of the male is to protect the group, or to ensure that his descendants survive.
It is in the interest of the species if the male is large strong and muscular, hence in the animal kingdom, these are characteristics females find attractive. This is achieved by having the males compete for mating rights, and once they win them (proving that they are the strongest and have superior genes) to mate as often as possible, with as many females as possible. If females were as sexually active as males they would not have much time to rear young and provide for the group. This is why many mammalian females will go into heat, and then cease to be sexually active once the young are born. In humans, imho, the differences you mention are part of the basic difference b/w male and female sexuality, which exists for a similar purpose.
Men are not monogamous by nature. Their sexual desire is easily quenched by a brief encounter with any female. If females were as easy to please, they would most probably be more promiscuous by nature and thus make worse mothers (remember I'm not talking about modern humans here, I'm talking about the most primitive creatures from which we evolved). Instead females need a degree of comfort/trust in and familiarity with their partner to achieve consentual penetration, and ultimately orgasm. The nature of sex itself consigns females the role of being physically intruded upon... This is why, even today, sex is a completely different concept for women than it is for men (something most young men fail to grasp). Have a think about this guys: what if every time you wanted to have sex, your body had to be penetrated by another person (the closest men can come to imagining it is by imagining having someone shove something up your ass), and even then you weren't guaranteed an orgasm... would you be as eager to have sex as you are? Probably not. Back to the point... all these differences in sexuality b/w males and females allowed our primitive ancestors to develop not only clear gender-roles which were optimal for the survival of the species at the time, and which with the development of modern society are all but gone; but also the monogamous life-long relationships which are still around today, and which were crucial in the formation of the traditional family-unit as we know it. |

As numerous others have stated, the female orgasm causes cervical contractions that suck vaginal fluid (usually mixed with semen if the male has ejaculated) into the woman's uterine cavity. From there the sperm "swims" up the fallopian tubes, and we all know what happens from there. So to say that the female orgasm has nothing to do with procreation is simply not true. Yes, I've also seen "the video."
I'd just hate to have to be the guy that cleans the camera afterwards.:nervous:

:whip: Wrong! hehehehe If my discovery channel watching is correct, the bonobos (another sup species of chimpanzee) have sex quite often and not just for procreation, they use it for favors and social behavior (staying in good "graces" with the alpha male or alpha female)... look it up. |

i am suprised that no one has mentioned female ejaculation... its rare but it happens... and i am not talking about getting really wet,, i am talking about actually ejaculating, that is g-spot penitration not clit. doctors still havent exactly figured this out,, some people say its a myth and well for some its definitely not.
anyway i think the answer to the purpose of the female orgasm is quite clear,, and charmscars said it best,,, SO WE WANT TO YOU... it all plays into reproducing and sexual desire and all the rest of that jazz, but its mainly so girls will you. i am suprised there is even a thread about this to be honest. |

dolphins are the only other animal that has sex for pleasure,, not just for procreation. favors and social behaviour are much different than pleasure,, thier brains arent developed enough to do it for pleasure, it is all instictual and social. |
