Trance/Progressive presentation at school

Ok, so here's the deal: I'd like to ask for the help of TA's on my project. Allow me to explain (but I'll try to keep it brief).

I'm taking a music appreciation class, and today we were assigned a project due a month from now. It's a 15 minute presentation on a musical style of your choice, and it's done in a group. Now, I'm not entierly sure how it happened, but I was unanimously elected to be the group's leader.

I found it strange, considering few people in the group had even heard of any EDM artists, much less fallen in love with the music as I have. Additionally, out of the 11 people in our group, 7 are already a close group of friends. And today was the first day. But I digress....

So this is what it comes down to: basically everyone seems to be fairly happy with our musical choice, since most people will probably go with a (directly) rock or hip-hop related topic. Only thing is nobody's really ever heard much of our topic, in terms of music. So I've decided that I'm going to...uhh...give them the opportunity to listen to some EDM relevant to our topic. I'll be lending out copies of my music, if you get what I'm saying (completely legally of course;)).

Our topic is trance and progressive house - the prof said that like in hip-hop you have sub-genres within, and he wanted us to be fairly specific. I realize these are two incredibly broad fields of music, but to the average listener, it will be close enough.

So far I have a list of different styles of both trance and progressive I want to have my group members take a listen to, it's just something I did in class so if you notice any significantcategories missing, please tell me.

Trance styles

Euphoric
Melodic
Dark
Tech (techno...)
Chilled
Break
Deep
Psy/Goa
Progressive (this will be the crossover genre)

Progressive styles
Euphoric
Melodic
Dark
Tech
Chilled
Break
Deep
Trancy (once again, the crossover genre)

And I have a list of the most influential DJ/Producers in each respective field as well.

Trance
Paul Van Dyk
Armin Van Buuren
DJ Tiesto
Paul Oakenfold
Ferry Corsten
Push/M.I.K.E.
L-Vee
The Chemical Brothers
Prodigy
J00F

Progressive
Sasha
John Digweed
Deep Dish
Gabriel & Dresden
Chemical Brothers
The Prodigy

(Yes I know the above two don't focus on progressive, but they're fairly recognizable names and they have a few prog. tracks)

James Holden
James Zabiela

I'm trying to keep it just to the most well-known people, as it will help in researching whatever topic I assign the person in my group. I'm also trying to use the "classics," not in the sense that they were made circa 1999, but in the sense that they helped define their genres, or are prime examples of their genres....things like that.

If you've made it this far, congrats:D

So here's a tenative list of music I'd like my group members to listen to. Like I said, I'm trying to keep to the "classics."

Trance
The Tastexperience - Highlander (Original mix) (melodic)
Delerium - Silence (DJ Tiesto remix) (Euphoric)
Ameobassassin - Piledriver (Grayed-out Summer mix) (deep)
Perfect State - Perfect State (Original mix) (Break)
The Roc Project feat. Tina Arena - Never (Filterheadz vocal mix) (vocal)
Tranquility Base - Razorfish (Aspekt's Chillout mix) (Chilled)
Vitalic - La Rock 01 (Original mix) (dark?)
VDM - No Hesitation (Original mix) (Tech)
James Holden - Horizons (Way Out West remix) (Crossover composition)
Astral Projection - Mahadeva (Original mix) (Psy/Goa)

Yes I realize both Silence and Never have vocals. I just wanted another track (in addition to Silence) that was vocal, but not necessarily euphoric. And yes, I realize No Hesitation isn't the best tech-trance out there, and some would argue that it isn't tech-trance at all, but I want the selections to be mostly trance and partly the sub-category. And I'd like to add "Gamemaster" in there as well, just not sure where.

Progressive

James Holden - Horizons (Way Out West remix) (Crossover composition)
U.N.K.L.E. - In A State (Sasha remix) (melodic)
Gabriel and Dresden present Motorcycle - As the Rush Comes (Sweeping Strings mix) (Vocal)
The Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar (Original mix) (euphoric)
James Holden - Solstice (Original mix) (Dark)
Carl A. Finlow - Ghetto Server (Original mix) (Break)
Der Dritte Raum - Hale Bopp (Original mix) (Deep)

And I want to put in "The Baguio Track" and "You Are Dreaming (PQM Meets Luke Chable Vocal Pass)." Once again, not sure where to put them in.

I'm going to put whatever tracks make the final cut onto an 80-minute CD, (which will come with instructions to destroy it after a 24 hour evaluation period...hehe). Two CD's by the way, one for trance, one for progressive house.

Any additions/removals/changes/whatever would be greatly appreciated. I want this to turn them onto EDM, but at the same time I don't want to bore them/overload them with information/give them cheese:D. I'd also like to use compositions that use vocals, a.k.a. songs, but in some cases it might not be possible. The vocals tend to keep a person interested, esp. since most people that listen to mainstream music are used to the short radio edits and don't have a large attention span when it comes to music.

Oh, I almost forgot. We're graded not on the actual content of the presentation (at least not in the traditional manner). Rather, we're being graded on how much the audience likes it (or is bored by it). I'm figuring if I can get the people in my group to love EDM half as much as I do, the enthusiasm should, at least in part, carry onto the audience. I figure we'll use psychedellic visuals and whatnot, but that's not till later.

Man if you've gotten this far, you have one hell of an attention span :D

So please, post any comments, and try to keep in mind I have to get each genre onto an 80-min CD. Criticism/praise/threats/sexual favors/suggestions are all greatly appreciated.

Edit: wow that isn't brief at all. My apologies.

You've done a pretty good job listing examples of all the different sub-genre's. Some I would argue, but there's no point since you're presenting it to a bunch of people who have no clue what trance is.

One suggestion: make sure you hand out a pill before the class starts. Then once you go up, people will be ed on E and will love your presentation ;)
Matt Jay
Maybe you could fit Tribal in their somehow?

Shiller - Ruhe (Humate remix)

Anyway, good luck with it. :toothless
Vigilante
Sounds good, mate.

Just one suggestion:

For the examples of trance tracks you should also include :
William Orbit - Barber's Adagio for Strings (Ferry Corsten Mix) as another example of euphoric trance.

That track is just too good to leave out!!!

Ahh crap how could I leave that out? See this is why I posted it =)

And about tribal, can't believe I forgot that too. Although now that tribal comes to mind I think of Praha pres. Xian - Kala Chant (Part 1).

Haha I'll just have to do it before the prof. comes in:D
SuperFarStucker
I suggest you leave out all the inanities and "sub-genres" and just focus on the overall categories.

Euphoric/Melodic are basically the same thing :)

Dark/tech trance are pretty close brothers as well (although a tech trance track "could" be euphoric and a dark trance track "could" be melodic).

Chilled isn't really even trance.

breakbeat trance is still just pretty much regular old trance with a breakbeat :)

deep.. doesn't really exist imo.

Goa is definetely a noticeably different genre.

Again, pretty much the same case for prog =) Good choices all around.

Being specific and defining something the same way with another word is the difference between good genre detailing and poor. Unfortunately, there is plenty of both. :)
EvilTree
I don't know how you're going to try to explain all this in 15 min. presentation, considering you have a lot on your plate to talk about and if you're going to play a track. (and I don't think you can play only part of a track in trance/prog music, as that... ruins the song, IMO)
Unless you're describing each subgenre very briefly and maybe focus on few.

Mentioning names isn't going to help, considering that your audience isn't going to have a clue to them.

Just a few things to consider. :)
AlphaStarred
i would mention hard trance and hard dance 2 :)
failsafe
chemical bros as trance? I've NEVER heard that before

Big beat yes
house yes
trance no
progressive no

some of the remixes perhaps are, but the brothers surely aren't either.

failsafe
ditto with prodigy.

cummon now prodigy as progressive?

the v00-d00-h00-d00-what you don't dare do people? I can't see john digweed seemlessly mixing firestarer into his sets.

Btw, it's "You Are Sleeping (PQM meets Luke Chable Vocal Pass)"

Not sure how that would fly in school though with the vocal content in the song. Although I'm sure there will be those with rap & rock that have much worse content. Is this for highschool or college?
