Hey, serge here...
I've been using a lot of software lately to produce; but it takes too long to create stuff with computer keyboard and mouse. I need some hardware that I can press... I know the Access Virus KC is top of the line and the best way to go; but i can't spend 2 grand yet; jesus!
So I'm looking for something that costs less but will be amazing... i've done a lot of research and I was wondering if you guys can help...
should i get:
just the JP8000
or the JP8080 with a Midi Keyboard
***I figure these are the two best choices if one cannot get their hands on access virus c series... (best for the money)
(websites for the best places to buy them would be appreciated)
what will be disadvantages/advantages; and whats the difference...
are there any other hard synths I should look up on that are around those prices? What will a Midi keyboard with a JP8080 give me that a regular JP8000 wont? I kinda get confused about that. Also; besides a hard synth (i know you dont need hardware to produce at all but...) if I get myself a JP8000; is there anything else "useful" or makes producing a lot easier that is hardware... another words; besides a hard synth; what else is very useful for combination with something like fruityloop 4, reason 2.5, cubase sx, etc.... also a newbish question: why use studio monitor speakers when one can just nice sd headphones or somethin? Also; anybody know of any good microphones to record with; havent seen any threads about that (used search)....
thank you in advance all; sorry for the newbishness ;)

speakers, sound card, mixer. These are generally nicer in hardware. Software speakers just suck.
The difference between the 8080 and the 8000 is that the 8080 has a vocoder and increased polyphony. I think that is all. There might be one other thing. Get the 8080 and an external controller if you can afford it. If you get a nice controller, it will have more uses |

I was thinking of doing the same thing.... I'm currently just shopping for a good controller. The Novation 25 Audio looks to be my choice, but if not that, then a Edirol PCR-50/80. The novation is its own synth i think tho, so I'm getting double for goodness!!.. along with the JP-8080...I'll be unstoppable!!!......

can good headphones like sd hd280s do? instead of speakers? like i have a nice onkyo 6.1 system; is it necessary to get studio monitors?...
also about the mixer; a hardware mixer? like a vmx300? what kind of mixer does the usual producer use? not too expensive i hope :) pleez fill me in; i'm newbish when it comes to the simplest things.
*thankx for the help with the contrellers sgtfoo; i'll be probably goin with the novation... looks like it is very good to go along with reason, cubase, fruityloops, logic, vsti's and such ;) |

HD280s? You mean Sennheisers? They might be good cans but I personally do not like producing with headphones on. It's not good for your ears to have headphones on for that long. I beleive that its also a lot easier and less straining on your ears if you use speakers. Obviously monitors are better than hi-fi ones but we make do with what we have don't we.
The main need for a mixer is to monitor the levels coming out of a hardware synth to make sure its not too soft and that more importantly its not clipping. I guess you could do this through the audio in in your sequencer, but I prefer to do it with a mixer so I can use the gain and volume to get it right. It will also let you play your track and your hardware synth at the same time and be able to adjust the levels in real time to get it spot on. If you have more than one piece of hardware, then that is when the need for a mixer really comes into play.
The VMX-300 is not the greatest mixer in the world for this job but it will work. Most people would use something designed for studio work rather than dj'ing, but its all good. Mackie tend to be the more popular choice for mixers, while Behringer mixing boards are popular for those on a budget. Persoanlly, I would never buy behringer, but that's just me. |

hmmmm now looking to save up for:
definitely:
JP8080
Novation Remote 25 MIDI Keyboard Controller
Audiophile 2496 (soundcard) or Audigy 2 (I have a onkyo 6.1 system; does audiophile support 6.1?)
**any suggestions on a model of studio monitor speakers & a mixer WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATED (something average; not too expensive... as you can see my choices for hardware I'm saving up for fall in the good quality hardware but not outrageously expensive.... not the best; but the best for the buck if you know what i mean :) ) (specific model name or at least company to go with)
*already have:
software:
**reason 2.5, cubase sx, fruity loops 4.1, FM7, Absynth, Atmosphere, Recycle 2.0, Reaktion, Waldorf Attack, Triangle II, Pro-53, Z3ta+)
**a whole bunch of sample CDs & refills
hardware:
***seinheiser hd 280s
***Onkyo 6.1 Home Theatre System (click on link for specs)
---above is the list of what I already have and hope on getting; if you see anything missing for me to have an ::easier:: time having potential to make amazing trance ch00nz please list. I am aware one does not have to have any hardware to produce amazing songs; but obviously having good hardware is a big advantage and it makes one a lot more time efficient; any more suggestions on any other hardware I should look into will be greatly appreciated
**thankx a lot for the previous help cheggy

If i was you , I would can the audiophile 24/96, a good sound card and monitors are the most important thing in a studio and although the audiophile has decent converters, you can get much better for little more. Quality and price , one card stands out , and I purchased this card , The Echo Mia Midi, which retails for 200 us, and if u got more money go with the rme 96/8 digi pad , it has better converters, lower latency and amazing stereo imaging and sound quality. If your recording from a jp8080 your gonna need a card with good analog to digital converters, and the rme has the AK5383 chip(used in the delta 1010 from maudio) which is a higher quality chip compared to the audiophile which uses the AK4528.
Get a pair of good near field monitors (I'm getting the event tr8's, they are great for the price 500 us, and have good low end response, if your mixing trance you want speakers that will give u that low end , so try to go for an 8 inch woofer)Dont use headphones to mix and master, they dont give u accurate bass response and no crossover. They are good for referencing. great headphones, cant go wrong are the "akg 240 studio " . I'll be picking up a pair.
Midi Controller - dont buy a novation remote 25, waste of money. you can use thr extra money for a second hand synth like a virus b. Get an edirol pc50 , its great, has nice keys, aftertouch, lots of knobs for automation and is built solid. stay away from m-audio controllers, and evolutions are good too but m-audio bought them out so i dont know if their worth it. after all whats a controller for, its just so you can punch notes into the piano rooll, no need for fancy gadgets that cost hundreads. edirol will do fine!
Microphone: Shure57 or 58, used by many artists in the industry. very good mic for vocals. industry standard
Get the jp8080, its better than the jp8000, it has 2 extra voices and a few other improvments. You can control it with your edirol, no problem there. |

trancenrg: that was officially the best comment I've ever seen on the TA boards
holy!!! thank you so much; thats exactly the type of response i needed to hear; my girlfriend is actually very much into singing and her vocals would r0ck in my tracks; thank you so much for your info on specific mics, controllers, sound cards, and studio monitors; exactly what i needed.... you pwnz :toothless; (I'm looking to produce progressive house / trip-hop)
anymore comments on the best price for the quality sound cards, mixers, studio monitors, controllers, midi keyboards, and mics will be greatly appreciated (yes i have used search; but most hardware threads are too old)
****also... to trancenrg, cheggy, and others: whats the best place online to look for buying these hardware pieces?
P.S. thank you so much you guys! great responses so far; any more opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Prices, you live in the States, just go to any local music store. they'll have everything i mentioned. If they don't they'll order it for you. But if you wanna buy online, just type the product in yahoo search, youll find alot of online stores with prices.
Now go my young jedi trance master and make trance. make us proud ;) |

You probably won't need the reomte 25 if you're getting a jp. All the dials and sliders on the jp should transmit midi data. All you need is a simple controller. I've got an evolution controller and it works fine.
The audiophile is a decent card. It will support 5.1 unlike most other cards. You need to get a seperate decoder for it, but it just plugs into your digital out line. You should be working in stereo though.
The event monitors seem like a popular choice at the moment. I wouldn't know though as they don't sell them here. If you are after a mic, can't remember if you are, the Rhodes NT1 goes pretty cheap these days if you want a condensor mic instead of the dynamic type.
Oh, and despite what you may think, hardware does not save time. It takes longer to implement hardware than it does to use software in a track. |
