| How do you select songs for a continuous mix, or a live set?? besides picking your favorites of course |

I don't really know much about Djing or mixing, since I use Traktor to make mixes (for my ears only), but I would say that the most important thing is to have a sense of progression.
The mix needs to sound like there is a certain flow or theme to it, not just random songs mixed in everywhere.
Usually, i start off with melodic trance, then move onto progressive, then uplifting, and finally some harder stuff to finish off.....so that the mix "peaks" at the end. |

| i use the harmonics guide to give me a selection between about 3-4 songs to go onto next, so i only get to pick between 3 songs due to my small lacking collection of categorized vinyl. i havent catagorized all my collection yet.:whip: i will soon. i use a 'main sheet' on my comp that has every song and mix categorized by first bpm then by the harmonics key chart in descending order from 1-12. from that i look at the songs and the sense they give me, ie what YOU would classify it as. i dont htink everyone calls everything the same (ie melodic trance, melodic house, hard trance, hard house, trance, progressive, etc..). so i just classify everything from the way i think it sounds and the sense i get from it, and choose the song that is best fit for next, also keeping in mind where i want to be in say 15 mins or so. say im really 'tribal' and 'hard' sounding at the begining but im wanting to move into 'progressive' about midway through the whole set (a 120 min set), so at 30 mins or so i would map a course selection of vinyl to get where i want. there may be a few different paths to take so i pick the one that i think would flow the best and get the feeling across i want. my vinyl collection is lacking though, especially my categorized ones like i said. so sometimes im extremely limited in my mixing and selecting. but who cares? im just a basement dj... a ty poor basement dj... lol. and im loving every minute, and have been for 4 years :D |

I like to think of sets I do as a rollercoaster ride- Peaks and valley's, loops, everything flowing together smooth.
You dont wanna start off with something slow and all of a sudden go into hard trance- or really banging-
Try to start a set off with something that is going to set the tempo for the whole set. |
