Just a post to remind all you peeps with stinking colds and flu (like me at the mo) to be careful with volume and frequencies when mixing in such a state....even moreso than you normally would
Can cause major hearing damage without you realising- inside of the cochlea goes hyper sensitive when you have sinus trouble, and is very prone to damage from even short exposure...
hey i actually took a friday night off last night im so bad- first friday night ive not played out in about 2.5 years- i can confirm that friday night TV sucks big time...
not looking forward to work tonite at all- i can barely stand, let alone mix
/end of public service announcement-

DOH! I just got back from snowboarding, and i left early cuz i felt kinda sick. On the way down, one of my ears *popped* and it was nasty, it made a squelching noise, and hurt really bad. now it's still ringing an hour later, my nose is stuffed up and i just wanna mix.
the ironic thing is, i was on the mountain feelin sick, and i thought, it, i'll go home and mix and get better.
guess not!
I repeat.. DOH! |

yeah I went to a Pantera concert when I had a cold, one ear was totally plugged up.
well about two weeks later the ringing went away. but I know I still have hearing damage, not just from that occasion, from many concerts and loud music.
ear plugs are always nice for concerts n such but when your mixing, it doesn't really work. |

| what headphone volume do you guys usually have it at on pioneer stuff? I find that if i'm mixing in my room about 1/3 of the way up. if i'm somewhere really loud it can go as high as 1/2 |

heh... when I'm doing headphone-transitions (HDJ-1000) on my DJM300 I usually turn up the volume to something like 2/3 or more...
Maybe it's just me but I don't think that the headphone amp on the DJM300 is very powerful at all, often listening to music at at least 1/2 with the bass knob at 2/3 when browsing the net and so on, not that loud to me |

Heh, ya, It reminds me about 2 years ago. Had an ear-infection and in school somebody did a presentation about his trompet. And of course, he had to play it. djeez, I was in a world of hurt!! :D
If you feel any pain, that means your body reminds you to taking care the body part that hurts. If your ear hurts, let is rest. |

Hmm... exactly how bad of a cold, and what kind of volume levels are we talking about? Since I have pretty bad natural allergies (pollen, mold, dust, everything), and live in the south (mold bait), I pretty much have at least a semi-stuffed up nose, and can hock champion loogies pretty much every day, all year round. Though I almost never get actually physically ill, I'm a health nut and my immune system is strong as hell. Does it actually take an actual cold/flu bug in your system?
Btw what kind of ear "pain" are you talking about... I honestly haven't been to many big events, and whenever I have I bring earplugs. I don't think I've ever had physical pain in my ears from music, though when I listen at home for longer periods of time (especially on the headphones) and then stop, my ears kind of have a feeling like they are plugged with wax for a minute or two, then are fine. As a general rule of thumb at home, I don't really play music so loud that I can't hear myself talk at all (any louder my sub would crack the sheetrock anyways :D ). |

Well its not exactly a good idea to listen to music at high volumes at all, cold or not - you do do significant damage to your hearing when you get older.
I might go to an audiologist and have him prescribe me custom made special music ear plugs. |

On my DJM-500 I have the monitor/headphone volume set to about the first tickmark. On my MDR-V700s, its hella loud just at the first mark. I don't think I'd ever turn it up any more than halfway past the first mark...not unless I wanted to seriously damage my hearing. Anyone else get this too? |

| i dont know about everyone but if the music isnt loud then its not interesting. i always enjoyed music at a high volume, it gets boring so soon when the volume is soo low. does neone else dislike volume at low level?:conf: |
