wow i really envy you!!! wish i had that kind of opportunity.
however i've never seen a trance dj dj'ing off a computer setup. i don't know why that man would tell you that. that kind of practice is just NOT respected in the music community. any fool can throw together songs on a computer and have it automatically beatmatched. playing a prerecorded mix even, has no heart and no soul, and expresses no love of dj'ing to me.
if i were you...i would hire a good , legit dj who is willing to spin for cheap, or even for liquor at first. if you really want to be a dj...get the equipment and learn to do it.
i go to a club to hear a dj spin music i love, not JUST to hear the music i love. if i went someplace and they were mixing with a computer, or a prerecorded set..i would not enjoy it half as much as i would with a dj. a dj is a performer...we want to see him/her do his stuff on the tables as well as dance to the music.
and dont' worry about losing musical direction over the club. whoever has the musical direction is who is spinning..but you can tell this dj you hire (best to get a friend to do it) that you want to hear a certain kind of music (ex. trance).
keep in mind that you want to make money and draw crowds. this club owner is not going to let you keep doing it if he makes no money. |

HAWT! I think I'll do that!!!
Just kiddin. :tongue2
I know exactly where you are comming from. I may not have DJed before, but I have watched documentaries, and training vids on DJing. I know the work it will take to get good. I know I can't get anyone to come see me play. But I do know that I know what good trance is and I can bring that to these local people.
Truth is, I would doubt very much that I could find a local DJ that has any REAL trance. I have yet to come across anyone in this state that is a trance head like I. |

But as I say, when I talk to locals, and I let them hear the type of music I listen to and if they would come to a club playing they, they mostly replied "sure, that's what they play down in the coastal clubs" See, even though many are southerners, they do travel the world for spring break, and most of the hot spots play trance and deep house now.

be careful man, people who say this sort of thing ('sure, that's what they play down in the coastal clubs') will come to the first gig but wont come again unless they are very impressed..
still what have you got to lose? knock yourself out i say |

Use this opportunity mate!
You never know who you will meet or what contacts you will get as a result of this.
With regards to your friend who owns the club, the chances are that he has given you this night because it's a hard one to fill (as with most clubs in the UK) and anything that makes it a bit more interesting is a plus for him too.
As for doing the whole thing on a laptop, it... why not. I just saw M.I.K.E. do the same thing last Saturday at one of my usual spots. Did the whole night on Traktor (Needless to say I am not impressed but as Freak said, I think that's best left alone for this thread).
I would say you need a DJ that either knows how to make a night work or one that knows lots of people, probably the latter. If you can setup some regulars who come then you will compliment with the occasional clubbers around them and your night stands a better chance of working.
My hunch is this about the US. Give it a few years and you will see the birth of a new club scene there as a lot of people who listen to trance are actually not old enough to get in to a lot of places/events due to really dumb ass age laws (i.e. 21+, I know this varies from state to state).
If I were you I would go for it. You have nothing to loose by doing this. If it doesn't work, fine you have lost some time and perhaps a little money for advertising (You must advertise!!) but if it works then who knows where you will be in a few years time.
Cheers

nemesis44 never fails to amaze me with his words of wisdom :)
(i also notice you post on basically every thread that comes in through the dj booth hehe :))
back to texaggie79: where in texas do you live? what university? also, i HIGHLY recommend you take the opportunity. when i was 15 i was offered to spin for a night at this club when i lived in india. (i was a club regular with my friends and we put tons of cash on drinks etc etc..) one problem: didnt know how to dj. i had 3 weeks before i played, so i found someone with some cdjs and learned fast. really fast. i went there with tons of cds, but i also had 2 cds of premixed tracks (each track was about 15-20 minutes long, so i would mix between premixed tracks, taking ALOT of stress off)
it was an awesome experience, and now, 3 years later, i dj at clubs around bangkok and house parties, have tables and mixer, and am a 100% vinyl dj. trust me, ANYTHING can happen, but opporunity only knocks once. dont pass this up, i would kill to come down and spin there. (btw, i may go to rice university next year.. so who knows, i may eventually ;))
good luck |

oh and i promise, i dont hate you
(but i suggest you learn on some cdjs or vinyl, so eventually you can be true to the music and mix it live) |

| If I were still in Texas, I wouldn't worry about an audience. No, I'm in good ole ALABAMA. |

ALABAMA?! damn i def would not have expected a trance scene in alabama! but hey, if it works, it works.
i would highly recommend TONS of advertising if you choose to do it.. this will be your biggest help by far. |

| Remember to build your sets... Don't start off with banging trance and expect people to dance. Watch them and test the waters. And don't play all your great records in the first hour. Pace yourself. Remember that DJing is about interacting with your crowd. It's not all beatmatching. It's more about playing the right record at the right time. |

Actually this is probably the best advice here so far. Don't worry too much about matching at first... hell even drop the tracks hip hop style (Just not actual Hip Hop) if you have to. The point is learning to play the tracks that will make people first want to get on the dance floor and then convincing them that they should stay there.
The other thing I would say to you is this. While it's great that you love trance and you want to put on a night, don't be afraid to play what the night needs to be played. If that means, only go as far as proggy house then do it. Whatever music you end up playing you will learn a lot about how people react and ways to get them to boogie.
If someone said they were going to DJ at weddings and parties then I would say do that too. While the music is very different some of the core principles are the same. You learn how to convince people to dance.
Experience always looks good to a promoter so even if this night doesn't work out as you wish it will look good if you have played at a club before if you are somewhere else and want more work.
(Rant TIME!!!)
You guys in the US seem to have problems fighting the 'MTV generation halfwits' who beleive that R Kelly is propper Rn'B and P Diddy is Hip Hop and for this my heart truly bleeds for you. The crazy thing is that dance music (other than house) will become big and then those wits will think that they discoverd it and you are the one who is following the trend. I guess we in Europe should realise just how lucky we are in that sense. Just remember that I admire your resolve and dedication. :)(Rant over)
Cheers
