or get the latest version here

Sometimes WMP wont play a file because its an unrecognized format, or the file is corrupted, or either you havent updated the latest codecs/WMP version. The first two happens to me on occasion.

The Core Media Player. One of the most stable players I have. Also plays alot of files I can't get to work in WMP.

By the way, that problem you are having is usually a codec problem. When the program starts it tries to index all available codecs and if it finds a conflict it can't fix it'll lock. Try unistalling some codecs if you aren't going to swicth players. Hope I've been of some help.
