PROPS! Harder than you'd think!

As a n00b in this producin' game, I'm sure you can all chuckle when I say, "this is much harder than I first thought!".

:o Last night I spent the better part of 3 hours just hammering out 1 bar of percussion that was decent enuff to loop(IMO). And that was nothing ground-breaking...

So I now find myself re-exploring songs that I've basically passed over as hohum or same-old and noticed that every song out there has major skillz incorporated into their production.

Last night was my FIRST ever attempt...so much to learn...Do you guys hear something in your head and say, "that part needs a jiggly-swooshy sound" and then add it in?
Or does it take years of knob tweaking in the fx and eq settings to figure out how to make certain "swooshy" sounds, etc.????

Yeah, you'll get to a stage where you know what needs to be done. Just depends on whether or not you're too lazy to actually do it. I'm normally too lazy.

I think the best noob, or pre-noob (what program do I buy type noob) comment is,

noob - "oh man, I've got the best ideas running in my head, I could make the sickest songs"

me - "yeah, but its not as easy as it seems. You can't just think, oh, I want that sound and expect a synth to make it and then morph it into something else. You need to practise a lot in the way of sound shaping."

noob - "I'll be able to, I'm good at that kind of thing"

me - "Fine, have fun. Just don't ask for my help again"

I use to be the noob, although I had nobody to help me. I stuck it out and now at least I have the aura that I know what I'm talking about.

You Guys obviously dont use 'Auto Object', its a program that lets you type in what sound your going for.
Its really usefull, I always type in 'PhAT LeADz!!11' and it gets the job done quite well.:toothless

Actually I DO use "Auto Object" (the new DXi 2.03 version) as the older VST version 2 didnt give me the proper results...

I type in PHAT and I'd always end up getting PHART...which wasn't actually what I wanted to hear. :D

Aint it true...

The advantage of that one bar of percussion is that, with variations, you now have the basis for an entire track.

I personally like to fire up Reason and knock out something nice that fits my mood / track, then slap it into Cubase. The advantage of Reason for me at least, is that I dont have to spend hours on the drums - it gives me a lot more creativity. I find spending too long on any part of the track leads to frustration and boredom, which ultimately leads me away from my PC!

Im currently listening to a lot of my favourite tracks again and trying to get ideas. The problem for me currently is, without a midi keyboard im struggling to draw the note lengths in that sound 'real' rather than over quantised blatant computer rubbish.

Ha...one of my housemates says the same thing.

Him: "I got a little program once, and it was SOOO easy to create techno beats! What a lame style of music... I even created a track that would be #1 on any chart in the world."

Me: "What program?"

Him: "Uh...Acid something."

Me: "So you didn't create anything. You took someone else's drum loops and used those."

Him: "Yeah...but that's all you do in techno!"

Me: "Why don't you try creating your own, and see how hard it is?"

Him: "Duude, no. That's like, all you do in techno. Use someone else's stuff and get paid for it."

That's the essence of a half-hour argument, where he said electronic music (in his mind, it's all the same as 'techno' ) was not a legitmate form of music.

This guy is a college grad student. And a walking anti-pot commercial. :stongue:

Normally I don't get pissed off at people for not liking music I like. But seriously, this was just ignorance at it's peak.

Took me 6 months to get non-crappy drum loops going... :eyes: :D

Shoot, been doing it for 2 1/2 years, and I still suck. :toocool:
