even with one record at full +10 pitch and the other at full -10 pitch they cant be matched
bearing in mind these are both trance records (anjunabeats releases 'rush' & 'day one' in case this matters)
theyre my flatmates decks and he's away so i cant ask him but i think somethings drastically messed up
they are KAM DDX880 decks
any ideas what might be wrong with them? |

well i see 3 possible scenarios for this:
1) the decks are ed
2) the vinyl are just too far off pitch from one another (probably pretty unlikely)
3) you have the 'reset pitch' function on. its the function you use when just playing a record or recording one or something. usually right on the lefthand side of the pitch slide adjuster is a button with a light toggle on it of some kind (usually). if you press it on, then the pitch is auto-set to zero NO MATTER where the slider is. so just turn it off and then the pitch should act normally. a test for this is to just play 1 record on the lowest pitch setting and start the record. then move the pitch slider around from top to bottom and listen to see if you can hear the change. when i first started mixing this was a problem that plagued me for a month or 2. i would just turn the power on and off (which usually resets the pitch control to normal setting). hope this helped, late- |

It sounds like one track is just too fast for the other one. Think of it this way (these numbers are not accurate cause I dont feel like calculation but the idea is simple)
Track A has a beat (at 0 pitch) of 120 bpm.
Track B has a beat (at 0 pitch) of 150 bpm.
If you speed up track A 10% it now runs at 132 bpm. (you just sped it up 10 percent)
If you slow down Track B 10% it now runs at 135 bpm (likewise you just slowed it down 10 percent)
Obviously Track B is still just a little too fast to match to Track A.
What I think is going wrong is one of those tracks is a lot faster than the other track. You simply don't have the pitch control to adjust them so they would match (you would need something like a 15% or whatnot). Don't worry about the tables being broke. Try listening to both tracks at 0 pitch and test my theory of why you can't match.
Hope this helps....

If you read whut songs he was trying to beatmatch, it would be quite obvious that his decks are ed.
When you increase and decrease the pitch, do you hear a noticable change in pitch ? |

nope no noticeable change in pitch even when i push it from -10 to +10 thats why i think theyre t
couldnt find any reset button tho there's 2 little holes next to the pitch slider but i aint gonna mess around with them
maybe my flatmates got them set up really weirdly (he plays D'n'B)
oh well
cheers for help anyway lads |

| those tunes should be running at around 138-139 bpm.that is rough estimate.i dont have a beat counter by the way.so if u cant match them then your decks are well ed as they shouldnt be that hard to match as the speeds are not that far apart.not surprised with Kams lol. |

Yeah sounds to me something is bypassing the pitch slider.
Are they decks with strobe dots on the platter (most of them, except those new "design" decks like the PDX-2000 or TTX-1, I'm not that familiar with KAM turntables, I know they have two "design/strobeless" TT's, and the rest have dots, which models I don't remember though).
If so, look at the dots when changing pitch. When you are at 0% there is a row of dots that should seem to stand still (usually the big dots), they should start to move when you change pitch. And if you say +/- 10% they should move pretty fast when you are at the extreme pitches. Not to speak of the tone change (a 5.6% increase equals a semitone, so make your count).
Pitch reset can also be found under the name quartz lock. Those two little holes are for calibration of the 33 and 45 rpm pitches, but they normally don't have enough range to f*ck up the pitch that much. |

ahhhh
quartz lock
yeah they have that on them with a green light on which probably means its on right
i didnt know what that was for so if i take that off then i can adjust the pitch?
i'll have a go |

lol
ok i feel pretty stupid now quartz lock was on
what the hell is it for? so u get perfect pitch or sumthing?
cheers guys |

It's basically for disengaging the pitch control, so your record plays at 0% (nominal speed). For if you just wanna listen to records.
The SL1200 mk2 uses an automatic one. If you come close to the click, the quartz lock (called that way because the rotation speed is locked by a quartz crystal) engages immediately, ensuring you get real 0%.
You don't need that feature practically speaking, because if you think a little bit, if you go gradually from a negative to a positive pitch, there is a 0 to be in between at some point. The problem is, that one can drift, so if you want to listen to records at nominal speed, it's best to ensure you are really playing at nominal.
Now, lots of people don't like that automatic lock, cuz according to them it makes the zone around 0% less accurate. So later they added the possibility to engage that lock manually. Either the pitch is disengaged, or it is locked to the quartz crystal frequency. Depends on the build. |

| Either the decks are ed or you can't beatmatch, most likely the first i reckon :p coz these 2 records are almost the same BPM, dunno which remixes you're using but I'm sure they're very similar speeds. |

thats what i was trying to say when i was saying 'pitch lock'. my new tables dont have that title, but now i remember my old ones did, my terminology sucks some ass.:eyespop: |
