| The town that did that is only about 40 miles to the west of me. And yah, Oregonians are ing briliant. I meen come on, only half a ton of explosives!?!?! They needed at LEAST 2 tons. Or maybe a nuke... |

If I recall correctly when this happened they considered giving that a shot but for whatever reason it wasn't entirely feasible. Odds are it'd be more expensive to actually haul it out to a depth where it wouldn't just wash back ashore in one way or another (apparently with some whales, the skeleton actually drops away from the rotting flesh, leaving a giant blob to be picked away by scavengers which may or may not wash ashore depending on distance and the rate it's eaten and decomposed).
Furthermore, a fair chunk of the cleanup could be handled by, as the reporter said, seagulls and other scavengers.
Blowing it up was probably the most cost effective and (in light of the resources that'd be used in dragging it out to an appropriate depth and distance) possibly even more environmentally friendly choice. (not THE MOST friendly choice, but consider the oil and gas that'd be used up in dragging an 8 ton corpse off the shore and out several miles into sea, if not more) |
