not being able to finish off tracks :(

ive been producing for a couple of years now. in the beginning i made like 1 track a day(although they sucked royally) but at least i finished my tracks. nowadays i find it impossible to finish my tracks, and i havent made more than 2 complete tracks in 1 year.

i figure this is because i didnt have such high expectations on myself in the beginning and i wasnt afraid of creating cheesy or ed up melodies(cuz thats where i stall most of the times, when im going to lay the melodies)

this sorta drives me nuts sometimes and id like to hear others opinions/experiences on this. how did YOU learn to realize your own inspiration and putting it down in form of good melodies?

I experience this all the time. I have the same story as producer with me. I mean the beginning..it was al just crap what you made but you kept continuing with it. Pretty weird if you ask me.

But than another period starts; You make something, - sounds pretty cool - but you just can't finish it off..I think it's because you really think about what your' producing at that time. What are the good parts? What are the bad parts? In my case there are more bad parts than good parts, so i start another project.

BUT. Right now I am busy with a brand new idea behind a track. A couple of times I thought...this is not it, no complete track possible here. But I just kept trying with new rhythms/melodies and now I have something that could turn in to a complete track!

All i can say is: try, try, try! Leave your work alone for a day and look at it the other day. Start with changes. I mean, change where you think you have to/can change.

I guess this is all i can type atm

I'm drunk btw:gsmile:

yeah...i still have this problem...i think that once you really learn the way to make what you want then you will have a better chance of completing songs...i'm TERRIBLY picky about what i make...i mean i've played a couple samples to some people on hear, but i still think that its total crap...

i don't finish much of my track's... even thou i have made soem melodies that i really like and others have liked too.... dunno why i don't finish them... but don't worry... it will come...

why don't you just take and go back to some old track.. or just wait like a week and go back to your track.

Try using Brian Enos 'oblique strategies'

google it, have a read and you will find its pretty interesting..

works for me all the time in the studi0- either recording, writing or mixing.

in fact, how about leave the work aside and dont think about it. because, if u were to kept looking and listen, the more u cant event do a sample. Leave for weeks, get into other stuff, let ur head rest and listen to some other song like Rock, Chill out or any other genres. When upon listening to it, u will feel that you got a feeling of touching again. It take time. Koz ur brain is messy up everything and kept thinking of the tune without knowing.
I having this feeling now so i gonna leave it aside and do other stuff before i touch it again.
:toothless :tongue2 :D

i can relate to that..

i have tons of unfinished tracks on my HD..
and i only completed three in the last year.

i don't really have a problem with the 'main part', but i'm usually unable to come up with a good beginning and/or end to the track.

Snap! I'm same, I must have about 300 ideas stuck on my drive and only a handful of complete tunes. I think it might be because we get presented with pro stuff and are constantly striving to be that good, but when we compare ourselves to it we're too hard on ourselves so we jack it in once the initial spurt of creating it has gone.

Someone said the reason I didn't finish stuff was cos I was a perfectionist and I think they're right. I want to just chill myself and not freak out that I don't sound like L-Vee yet.

I read once that some people did an experiment - people were making pots, one half of the room had to just make perfect pots and the other half had to just keep on churning them out one after the other one, not worrying too much about it. In the end the people who churned them out one after the other improved the most.

Maybe we're just too harsh on ourselves??

ROFL, Ill add to this list.. it was exactly the same for me, could pop out tracks every day.. I had no one to compare my self to.. once i progressed.. and started listening to "Pro" trance tracks, I started comparing myself to them.. its really difficult now But i think not to rush it and focus on main areas of a track, and compare it to your previous track released and not a professional track.. this usually works.

count me to the "not-able-to-finish-tracks-producers", too! :D i can make really nice short samples, but (dont know why) i dont have the patience to finish a track...sometimes i dont have time, sometimes i have no inspiration, sometimes nothings works and i shut down fruity, sometimes motivation is missing...i hope one day ill finish my first own track! :toocool:

Only the other day I completed my first "second period" track, It feels good when you do finish one, with me I just find it hard to develop the track and it just gets boring and sounds way to repetitive :(

but its not easy for me to be like the ones who makes several pots...ive tried to set myself goals like: "by the end of this week this track WILL be finished" but its just totally impossible to finish it..its so wierd

ive been thinking maybe it would help workin together with someone. if someone would be interested in doing this feel free to contact me @ msn: [email protected]
