yesterday i was talking about rave and music stuff with my 2 friends.
I said 1999 was a kind of peak time when the scene became really popular and i m still missing that time.
but suddenly one of them said the real rave scene has become so popular in 1993~1994 that many young kids started taking MDMA and listening to Detroit techno or something.
he said the peak time was 1993 !! :conf:
anyway.. i m 24 years old now. and I have experienced late 1990's rave scene. the guy who said 1993 was best is now 29 years old. he has not experienced 1999 or 2000 scene.
what do u guys think about it?
is it impossible to compare ?
and could you plz tell me about what was going around in 1992,1993,1994?
I wanna know the atmosphere, famous Djs, rave scene in general at that time. |

I've had the good fortune to experience both '93 and '99, but then again, I'm almost 28 now ehem...
Anyways, '93 was the year when trance got really big in the underground (rave) scene across europe. Even voted the year of trance in the german scene mag Frontpage if I remember correctly. For me this is the magical time because it was around 92-93 I discovered they joys of trance myself :)
So, out of pure personal nostalgic reasons it's very hard for the year '99 to beat the year '93 (at least for me). However, in '98-'99 Trance exploded once again but on a much bigger scale. In many ways a very good thing :)
This success changed the direction of trance somewhat though, since suddenly there was alot of money to be made. Hence, we got the very formulaic type of trance of today. Trance used to be a bit more experimental and not as predictable as it is now. I'm not saying everything sucks now, beacause I still very much like trance of today but sometimes I miss the playfulness and innovative tinkering with the trance-formula that was much more common before '99.
Good post topic though. It's something an old fart like me enjoys to discuss hehe :D |

Future Sound of London, Leftfield, Orbital, Underworld, etc...
Its like DJ Irish said. There weren't rules for electronic music back then.
People weren't in it for the money as much. |

Hm, the Goa Essential Mix was done in 1994.
Btw never say "rave" again :clown: ;) |
well, it WAS rave back then (1993). 1989 was another important year for edm, as it was the second summer of love in the UK and when acid house was exported to Europe. if you want a good historic background of those early years i recommend the book Generation Ecstasy.
i personally prefer the music of '99 just because i can relate more to it since i was able to live it. and i am way more into the Dutch school than the German kind, even if they are related. |

It's not especially hard getting hold of these kind of tracks if you know where to look. Even on P2P. Just go to your favorite hub and ask the right questions :)
If you want it on vinyl I recommend Ebay. I've gotten hold of a lot of my personal "back katalog" through there. If you just wanna listen then I have to plugg for mine and LoneRaver's channel on www.di.fm called Classic Techno/Trance (Sorry to anyone who feels I'm blabbering too much about this one hehe).
This channel features tracks made earlier than 1997 and style ranges from Trance, Rave, Techno, Breakbeat, etc. Every track I mentioned above is on that playlist plus of course much much more. (The techno part is somewehat lacking but I just added a bunch of stuff from the allmighty Tresor label and more will come soon.)

its hard to say which era was better. its different for everyone.
I cant say anything bout the early 90s rave scene coz i was too young to go out and really didnt have any inkling bout what a rave scene was.
I do think that one of the best differences bewteen 93 and 99 trance or EDM is the scene. I think 1999 TRANCE was superbly global, in a sense that the same anthems were being banged out from Moscow to Birmingham, from Tokyo to LA...
whereas in 1993 the scene was so phenomenaly diverse. Like I said ive never been to any pre 1999 rave, but i've read stories about Goa parties in Thailand, warehouse techno parties with Richard Hawtin and Derrick May, undeground NASA events in NYC, jungle parties in philadelphia, happy hardcore events in the UK...
i mean its a totally different atmosphere back then, and I do realize that you can still classify locations nowadays with the genre of music it represents (Detroit Techno, Philadelphia Drum n Bass, German hard trance, Israel psy-trance etc..) but i think that TRANCE itself is more global in a sense.
DJs fly all across the world now, not just from once city to another in their own country. Plus the scene is not as underground as it used to be. it's still a "minority" music genre in a sense, but back in 1993 it was a word-of-mouth/flyer kind of thing.
Well dont want to ramble here, i just think each genre has it pros and cons.

in a way i kind of agree with this because early rave or "classic" rave tracks aren't that appealing to me, yet the more I become immersed in this scene, the more i like going back and discovering the roots and the spark that ignited our whole scene. It's pretty interesting stuff to think about and I almost wish i was old enough to experience it back then..
and it also makes me wonder where i'll be in 10 years if TRANCE is as mainstream as ROCK and RAP and COUNTRY and people will be asking how the "underground trance scene" was in 2003 |
