I just came back from watching this movie. It was one of the saddest films ive ever seen. The cinematography was beautiful, acting was excellent and the story was a very unique one.
The representation of Iranians was positive for once - not like most Hollywood films that like portraying our race as religious terrorist fanatics out to kill Americans.
Not your typical blockbuster film, but very emotional.
I being part Iranian, was compelled to watch this becuase of the similarities that Ben Kingsly's character had with many exiled iranian men, who, as fathers had to start from scratch in the "New World" while trying to maintain the class and dignity that they were surrounded by in their lives back home before those religious islamic pieces of came into power.
For others who watched this...what did you think? |

I still have yet to see a bad review of this.
but I thought it was the most depressing movie of all time. At the end I was really really bummed.
great acting though, gotta love that. just that ending, I wanted to kill myself. |

i saw this with my girlfriend caus' last samurai was sold out ;).
I really like the movie. As was sad before, SUPERB acting and excellent cinematography.
It was probly the saddest movie i've ever seen. Also at the end you felt like their might be some hope and than :(.
And than it just got worse... truly depressing ending.
But I don't know if that's a bad thing since when a film can make you feel depressed, it must be pretty good :) |

| It was hard seeing them in that state at the end, cus they were just an innocent family. |

why do so many find it depressing?
i agree that they were an innocent family that got thrown into a difficult situation, but they had a way out.. instead ben's character goes on to seek vengeance (against authority rather than the individuals, obviously stemming from their Iran days), and bring his son into a fiery situation and everything up... dumb moves like that can't justify remorse in my opinion... |

How does he seek vengence? He was trying to co-operate for the well being of his family. |

Why did he then stage that thing in front of the court? Throughout the whole movie they are sort of foreshadowing it with his flashbacks of them being ousted by the Iranian government (was it the Ayatollah Khomeini gov? i forget now), even though he was a loyal soldier. They had a way out, win-win situation for both, but instead he staged that thing in front of the courtroom as a revenge against the authority, like i said earlier. And to top it all off, he made his son an intregal part of it. So he basically ed himself and his family over.
But then again on the other hand, I guess it wouldn't be much of a movie if they had just gone and completed the transaction. Maybe they could've twisted the storyline differently somehow? Oh well, either way it was an ok film, worth seeing cuz of Jennifer Connelly. I'd see anything she puts out. Ben was great as usual too. |

There was no court scene in the movie. I dont recall it. There was a wedding scene....and i still dont understand how he seeking vengence for someone? He simply left Iran becuase he sold fighter jets from the king to other nations. He was part of the Royal elite. And when those idiots came into power he needed to leave and set up a new life in San Francisco. There was no win win situation, it was a lose lose situation. |
