what an eerie and weird movie
I just finished watching it for the first time
I thought I had everything figured out until I got to the last 10 minutes...
have any of you seen this, and if you have, would you care to explain the ending to me?

One of my favorite movies the atmosphere is amazing. The original is classy aswell.. I think there is a book to witch both movies were based from.

yes its based on a novell.

basically, Solaris, the planet, has the power to delve into human psyches and re-create lost loved ones--in Kelvin's case, his dead wife, whom he then wants to bring back to Earth.

yeah..basically the planet had the power to read your mind and create your reality for you based on your innermost desires...if that meant bringing back a loved one, then thats what you'd get. basically you would have the power to manifest your reality. in the beginning of the movie they show him getting his finger slightly cut while chopping some vegetables...that memory is hidden in a corner of his mind so when he's on solaris at the end of the movie doing the same thing, thats the outcome he subsconsciously expects and so he cuts his finger again and thats when it hits him and he kinda looks up surprised...

It was okay, but I prefer the original Russian version, and think it is superior for a number of reasons.
