I want to remix a tune. Now what?

Ok, so here I am listening to amazing '90's rock tune which I think will sound awesome if it was remixed to be a trance tune. How can I make it a reality? I figure if I had the project broken down by track I could take some sample of the hook, chorus and vocals to make amazing track. Anyone knows what is the process for realizing this idea? Do I need to contact the label and ask them for it, including the bunch of legalese contracts? I haven't got a clue how to approach a project like this - can anyone help?

as long as your not making money out of it and just do it as a personal thing you don't have to contact the label really...

but remember one thing... it ISN'T that easy to get the ideas that you have in your head down.... there is a thread about this a couple of threads down...

but check out the link killdadj posted...
hey cheggy
You could try contacting the label and asking for some of the vocal tracks. Tell them you are a student and they may actually give a damn. I don't like your chances though, but its worth a shot.

Nice info - but not quite what I was looking for. I'm talking about the actual method to this mayhem. What I want to do is get the song from the label - e.g individual tracks (before they are bounced - e.g. "mastered") - this way I can pick and choose what I need and morph it as necessary. So, as an example if I want to take only the vocal track and leave all the rest out or if I just need the baseline or drums...

So, in essence I am looking to find out how to approach this project - do I need to pay the studio for this, do I need to call them/write them/beat on their doors until they meet my demands?

Does it make my question any easier to answer? :D
