| Can you become clinically depressed through events that cause you a lot of pain? Just wondering, and no, im not suffering the after effects of any drugs. |

Yes you can. After getting more than one setback you have a big chance of getting depressed, cause life seems to be no longer in your control.
Btw, such a depression often leads to drug use, and this will even make it worse... |

AFAIK, that's the main reason for depression.
we're talking about emotional pain, right? |

there are many different degrees of depression...lets say for example major depressive disorder. here are some main features..
You have had at least one or more depressive episodes in the absense of any manic or hypomanic episodes
you have a prominent or persistent depressed modd or loss of pleasure for at least two weeks, accompanied by four or more symptoms such as poor appetite, insomnia, psychomotor retardation, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, inability to concentrate, and thoughts of death or suicide.
the less sever type is called adjustment disorder with depressed mood. this is where you react with a maladaptively depressed mood to some identifiable stressor occuring the past 3 months. SYmptoms stemming from bereavement do not count though. once the stressor has terminated, the symptoms must remit within 6 months.
thats what abnormal psychology says. |

no actually there is one called dysthymia where someone is just feeling bothered fro most of the day for about 2 years. Also major depressive disorder does not need a specific crappy event to set it off. |

i was with 3 years of horrible depression until i was caught with something very disturbing to my art teacher. i was sent to a counselor, who brough a psychologist, who brought the police to escort me to, well, a mental hospital. I was in different programs. In total, i was in a mental hospital for a month, and went through a year of counseling before i was allowed back into school. Everyone is very different when it comes to diagnosis, but please, don't make my mistake and wait for it to go away. hospitals, drugs, suicide attempts, cutting. that was my journey and i doubt anyone wants to go through this. if u ever suspect any type of deprssion, share it with someone who can help
I made a thread about a year back after i had realized that my life was important and i have lots to give to this world, and even if i'm not successfull, at least one person will love me out of my family, friends and associates. YOU ARE NEVER ALONE

Hey, thanks for the replies.
I dunno what my deal is right now. I have always had an esteem problem, and well, i just had a relationship of 7mo's end, and its just bad. Like, i usually feel worthless and cant stop downing myself for stuff and now its totally worse. I know that we have all been where i am at now, its just that i KNOW i have no reasons to consider killing myself - however i often consider it as a way of escape (i have never tried though).
