Sony's gone to crap lately .... like the overall quality of manufacturing with just about everything.
In regards to Ibm... well they used to be the most expensive but the prices have dropped a bunch and a lot of their lappies are affordable now days.
Concerning warranty, BEWARE! A lot of companies will screw you over and say they cannot service it cause : 1. It's an "overseas" model 2. They're not "authorized".....
Having lived in various countries and having had warranty issues and shizzle I know how it is. I know they're no point of reference, but I bought this Compaq lappy in France tried to get warranty in the usa for it ... they wanted me to ship it back to France!
Refurbs can be pretty good deals just make sure it's totally checked out when you get it ( obviously ) and just to let you know in most cases warranty is reduced to something like 90 days instead of the standard one year. ( Which isn't really negociable as far as getting an extended warranty like you could with a brand new item ). |

dam. i was going to buy a dell. always had great service out of the desktops, thought laptop would be the same. Guess ill see where this thread goes before i make my decision. |
From what I've gathered they've offered decent service on everyone I know that has one ( at least here in the US ). And they better have! Most people I know have had the hard drives go crap on the dell inspiron lappies in particular ( peeps I know that have them use them for vjing which is really hard drive intensive and makes those hds go to crap ); some cases the hard drives have died more then once. |

While we're on the subject, what's the deal with centrino processors. It's a newer processor yet they all seem to have lower clock speeds (i haven't seen higher than 1.7GHz). |
i'm pretty sure there are higher.. at least in toshiba... cuz i've seen a 2.5 ghz... one.. |

Per ]Intel's Website , Specs for Centrino Cpu
Available Speeds 1.70 GHz, 1.60 GHz, 1.50 GHz,
1.40 GHz, 1.30 GHz
Low Volt: 1.20 GHz, 1.10 GHz
Ultra Low Volt:1 GHz, 900 MHz (0.13µ)
Julie 2.5 ghz would be for a regular P4.... NOT a Centrino ;)
Centrino has an "advantage" over other cpus ... lower power consumption, integrated WAN capacities, less case space needed ( = smaller design ). |

alienware is overpriced....
Intel® Pentium-M Processor 1.7Ghz
Intel® 855GM Chipset
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100
14.1" SXGA+ LCD Screen
1024MB DDR PC2100
Hitachi 60GB 7200rpm Hard drive
for $2,649.00
i bought my dell 6 months ago with the same specs (except my screen is close to 16") and i paid $500 less. i have an inspiron and love it. my roomie has a dell but has been having probs with tech support. if you are computer literate...go dell. if not then dont go dell. |

Be careful. The brands that go cheap (esp. dell) tend to cost you in the long run. They buy cheap parts that fail often. I know 2 people with dell laptops that had problems with them, so if you get one get a good warranty and keep backups of your files.
Apples are great (expensive but low failure rate). Don't be fooled by low Apple clock speeds; G4s hold their own against much higher clock speed P4s.
Anyway, check out consumer reports, no matter what you're buying. The small price you pay for reviews is so worth it in the long run. |

i've had my dell inspiron for almost 2 years without a real problem... then again, i haven't really pushed it unless you count counter-strike as pushing it...
i'd personally go with a powerbook or a light-model fujitsu, but for under 1500, that's gonna be difficult... |

Centrino isn't a processor. "Centrino technology" singifies a mobile pentium 4 (M) processor, integrated wireless LAN, and the intel 855 memory/graphics memory control hub chipset. Laptops based on centrino technology are designed both to consume less battery power, and offer a wealth of options for the user on the go.
To my knowledge, Intel hasn't released a pentium 4 M over 1.7 ghz. Consider though that the pentium M has has an L2 cache that is double that of the P4....so a 1.7 Ghz P4M performs about the same as a 2.6 Ghz P4. |
