Ok, so for the last three months I have been running every damn program I have through 'run application' since my explorer causes an illegal operation every time I start up my PC. As a result, I have no desktop or icons and very limited access to my computer. It broke down on my after downloading a resume builder off of download.com, of all places. I just did an online virus scan and it came up clean.. gahh???!!! :eyespop:

when things go wrong one of the best things to try is re-install windows. it sometimes helps. another more extreme (and often necisary) option is to format your hard drive. formating solves everything :) but is quite a bit of work :(

hehe, I'm aware of those options.. I just don't wanna. I'd lose everything on here; this computer doesn't have a burner, and I don't have an extra hardrive kickin' around.. might have no choice. :whip:

there is no "easy" way to fix it other than doing a clean install. So go out and buy 2nd drive (for christ sake they so cheap) install windoze on that drive and move ur data over. ur one of those idiots never backup and wine about losing their data, smartin up.:whip:

its probably some program in the win.ini or startup folder or something, stopping windows from running correctly ie something from the startup folder or something

if i was in ur prediciment, id do an install of windows. all my mp3s and data is on my second drive (oh how i love it)

reinstalling windows does not require an extra drive....

it installs windows over the existing copy of windows.

Why don't you give us some more details? What version of windows? Have you tried to run it in Safe Mode? Maybe selective startup? The way you fix it without re-installing windows depends on the version you have. *Note* Re-installing windows over an old version is NOT a fix-all. Most of the time it's just a software or registry conflict, simple to correct if you know what your doing. :D

clean install is best and that requires backing up ur data (which he currently has no way of doing), thats why he should get a 2nd drive.

I ran it through safe mode three months ago when it first happened. :D I don't even think I can run selective start up.. 'msconfig' is the command line for that, isn't it? It doesn't work. :disbelief I can't run Control Panel, or explorer.

Put the Windows disk in your computer and re-install Windows without the reformat option. If it doesn't fix it, find a Norton Disk Doctor or similar and let it do it's thing to find problems. Sounds like corrupt FAT or other root directory files. Also go to a web geek site forum for help. They have more patience and/or experience than many folks on the forum here. You must be on the cheap anyhow with no CD-RW capability and are running a POS.

good luck!
