Matt Darey has been one of the pioneers of trance since its early beginnings in 1994 with the release of his first (Goah Trance) record "Li Kwan - Point zero" a track that put trance on the map of dance music. The Matt Darey style has been a major influence on the next generation of trance producers such as Michael Woods (who was trained by Matt), Above and Beyond, Darren Tate, Neo and Ferina.......the list is endless.

Since then Matt Darey's remixes and productions have been responsible for many of the massive tunes that made trance a household name in 1999-2000 selling well over a million records with the Darey imprint:

Matt Darey reviews his top 10 records he picked up lately!
1) DP Infectious (Alpha magic)
A banging remake of “The Virus” with that infectious female vocal “Take a blow take a puff.........” you’ll remember it straight away when you hear it. This harder edged trancer builds up nicely towards the big break down and whoosh it kicks in like all the best classic trance tunes ever did and a hard euro bline blast you up to the next level.

2) Li Kwan Point Zero (Mash Up Tunes/Liquid Assett)
One of the early trance classics gets a lease of new life after 10 years away from our dancefloors with new mixes from the like’s of Lost Tribe and Matt Darey amongst many others. The Lost Tribe interpretation is the Favorite with its driving bassline and break beats leading into that unforgettable Goah trance vocal from back in the day. Its time for a bit of the old Euphoric hands in the air before it charges back into the new decade of pumping trance.

3)Lost Tribe – Possessed(Mash Up Tunes)
This is the follow up to Last Summers anthem Gamemaster which was doing the rounds in the clubs for the third time in the last eight years. The new tune brings you pumping basslines and electro riffs with the big breakdowns. Harder edged melodic trance with a twist of Kraftwerk makes this definitely one to energize those dancefloors into the summer.

4) E Craig “The Beat Goes on” (Sam Sharp Remix) Spinnin
Techno meets hard trance on what has gotta be the most bangin piece of hard trance at the moment with a dark and pumping mix from Mr Sharp. The latest in a long line of pumpin harder edged trance floorfillers from label of the moment. Spinnin Records...cool as F**k, Ard as nails!

5) Agnelli & Nelson “Holding On” (Deep Mix) W/L
The Irish lads have been fighting back recently with tunes like Afterburn "Winter sun" and now there right on it with three mixes of a vocal trancer with that distinctively Irish female vocal from Aureus and only a light sprinkling of fromage. Watch out for an album which is in the making. To be released on 26th Feb on Extravaganza.

6) Airscape “Sosei” (Johan Gielen) ID&T
Only a limited number of copies were circulating of this over the latter part of last summer the track . Now the headlining track from the new album from Johan Gielen due for release before the summer on ID&T.

7)GD – Meri jaan (Mondo) Release TBC
The Debut track from Gurjit Delay a young Asian producer on Darren Tates Mondo label(probably another of Tates aliases). Bouncey European semi hard trance with one of those throbbing basslines to get you right on it with a distinctive Indian vocal and mad moment in the breakdown. The vocal trips out in the first breakdown then kicks into a full on song in Hindi/Panjabi which most of the glowstick massive wont understand but that didn’t stop us lovin Yeke Yeke did it. Bouncin on into a full on Eastern synths and a hardhouse crescendo you wont forget you heard it. Definitely not a sing-a- long lyric for me but the melody sticks and I reckon this one will do some damage with the U.k kids not to mention Deli dancefloors back in Bollywood.

8) Benni Benassi – Love is Gonna Save us (Data)
This time Benni brings us a mixture of funky basslines and driving melodic trancey synth riffs. I rate this one as a bit of stomper with its progressive builds and a couple of breakdowns that do the buisness without trying too hard. Miss apple Mac is back on vocals but this time she can sing which adds a querky twist that’s gonna make us all remember it the next day.

9)Dj Choose & F - Compress (W/L)
No line up would be complete without these boys from Copenhagen but this time there back with a hard as nails drum track. Not for the faint hearted, after a long stretch of pounding rhythm they bring in a dark driving synth that get you right on it even if all you’ve had is an expresso. Watch out this one doesn’t creep up on you and run you over like a fright train!!!

10)Bossanova – Stone cold (W/L) (Tsunami) Release date TBC
A slice of duch vocal trance with chunky beats, energetic baselines get the tune off to a racing start. Before you’ve reached the end of the first lap your into a bit of a Simon and Garfunkle folk ballad but salvation is round the corner when it kicks back in with a housey riff taking you all the way to the finish line. All in all a fresh sounding trance release for 2004 on Ferry Corsten’s Tsunami Label.

Matt Darey Pres Mash up - Liberation(Fly Like an Angel):eyes: :eyes:

God.. nuff said!

i can't wait to hear his remake of Angel and Under The Red Sea

Under The Red Sea was one of the break ambient kind of songs that just send chills down your back, combine with some hauntingly beautiful opera kinda vocals.

and Angel, well the piano was just simple beautiful...hope he doesn't screw the remakes up like he did with Gamemaster 2003, though he did do a good job on the remake of Point Zero

If you check out his website, you can hear samples of almost all the tunes listed here :)

Matt Darey is without a doubt a legend, and his new productions have not reduced in quality. His remixes of Point Zero, The new Lost Tribe tune "Posessed" and "Nocturnal Delight" are all a breath of fresh air to the trance scene, and to me bring back memories of 98-99. I hope he continues to deliver inspiring music throughout 2004; maybe he'll fulfill my wish and release an artist album someday! Till then, I'll just keep enjoying the new tracks :D
