Hi,
I know the question of 'which mp3 player' gets asked all the time, but I want to know something quite specific and I was hoping you guys could help...
I want a 40gb mp3 player to RIP my CD's onto. On either the iPod or Creative Jukebox, can you play tracks without a gap between them?
I want a player that will play my sets without any gaps between the tracks, but I want to be able to skip through songs!!! Do any of you currently do this with an mp3 player?
Your help will be appreciated,
Cheers,

not sure bout the no gaps but a very good feature of the ipod is that if you have a 120minute essential mix for example, it is very very easy to fast forward through to your favourite tune which may be at the 90minute mark. U can do it using the scrolling wheel and can move it along to anywhere in the song, much like on winamp.
its a pain i can't do it on my mp3 cd player.
id guess that no mp3 players would have gaps in between songs. I can check for you though |

| I appreciate your quick reply. I am also interested to find out which mp3 player has the longest battery life? I heard that the ipod has battery problems. Have apple done anything to solve this prob yet? |

ipod battery is rechargeable but only has approximately 1500-2000 hours of battery life, i dont why i said only coz thats actually quite a lot.
the problem was that once the battery went you needed to buy a new ipod, due to several court actions apple have now said theyd replace the battery free of charge for the first 2 (mite be 3 years) and after that itl cost you, it wont be that much tho |

| I believe the battery life significantly decreases on the iPOD when listening to large files, simply because it has to load more into memory. |

load what into memory? the ipod isn't caching the file from anywhere, its stored on a piece of solid state hardware. |

I have a 20 gig creative 3 jukebox and i like it very much.
It has a really good sound quality, even when you plug it to a 4 speaker system. It has an excellent search feature, very quick and to the point.
However it doesn't allow you to choose the position in the set. You have to fast forward to where you want, and this is a bit slow. That's the only problem i have using the jukebox.
Other than that, the battery is excellent and lasts a lot really. Especially if you buy an extra batteriy ($45), it can last a week without recharging.
I bought the jukebox over the ipod because of the recording features - i wanted something to record my sets directly, and the nomad does it perfectly and i can encode to any quality mp3, wma or wav on-the-fly, adjust the gain of the recording, etc. If you are not using the recording, maybe the ipod is a better buy.
About the gaps between the tracks, the loading is very quick but if you want there is a EAX feature in the jukebox which simulates a fade between the tracks playing. |

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to go with the Jukebox.
1 More question. Does it take a long time to transfer files via USB? Say 20gb worth...How Long?
Thanks again,

The transfer rate is about 1,5 mb per second. It's a bit slow, 20 gb will take about 3 and a half hours...
If you have a firewire connection, the transfer rate will go up 20 times |

Check this thread out before you buy:

It compares all the major players in detail.
I think atm the iRiver iHP120 is the best player overall, with drag and drop to windows, 16hr battery (inbuilt same as iPod) life before recharge, in built radio, line in record.
The iPods battery lasts 6-8hrs before recharge which is just no good. iPod has best navigation however with it's touch scroll wheel thingy, best lookin too, but most added features you have to buy seperate, and it's very expensive.
Other than that go for the creative Jukebox Zen NX. It has 14 hr battery which is also replaceable (battery is proprietary tho, costs about $45 if you want a spare). Creative players have by far best sound with EAX and 98dB S/N (other are 90dB S/N). Has worst software, not plug and play like iRiver, but can buy Notmad seperate for $25 which is excellent. This player is the cheapest and has a 60GB model so may be the best one for you.
apple ipod 20gb $500
iRiver iHP120 20GB $400
creative ZenNX 20GB $250 (60GB is about $300)
There are other players but I think these three are still the best. |
