Normalizing issue

Hi TA's,
I use Cubase SX as my mastering tool. I have discovered that the bit resolution can drop if you normalize ( in Cubase SX ). A 44 khz sample at 16 bit could become 44 khz at 13 bit after normalizing, for example.
I read before that it was recommend to master with 24 bit samples and is this the reason why?? ( Probably not :D ) |

hi there, you know what dropping the resolution or colour depth on your desktop looks like. It looks blocky and undefined. This is what happens to your audio when you lower your samplerate. So 24bit means you have more definition, less chance of rounding errors and even more headroom to work with.
If CDs worked at 24 bit then life would be grand, but they dont so at some point or another you will need to drop to 16bit, unless you dont want to distribute to cdr or MP3. But if you drop from 24bit to 16bit in a good way (like using a good limiter with a good dithering algo) then your mix will sound better or even louder than if you had been mastering/producing at 16bit
So in a round about way to answering your question ... yes :) |
