When buying your first set of decks, there are usually two possible scenarios:
a) you're not sure if you will have the talent and/or ambition to become a professional DJ
b) you know that you are serious about DJing and you will be spinning for a long time
In case a), the best thing would be to find somebody who will let you use their turntables so you can find out if DJing is for you. If not, then look for decks that are reasonably priced, and that will not lose their value quickly (since you will be selling them either way) - Stanton STR8-60 would be a reasonable choice.
In case b), I STRONGLY urge you to get a pair of Technics SL-1200 MK2 or M3D. They are simply the highest quality deck you can get, you will be using them at clubs, and they will last forever. Whatever you do, don't buy mid-range decks because if you pay a little more you can get the 1200s which are the best choice for DJing.
Mixers - hmm, there is a lot of models to choose from, as a beginner mixer I think the Numark 1001x / 1002x series does a fairly good job (I heard some horror stories with the Gemini mixers, bad x-fader / volume faders). Mid-range you might want to take a look at the Vestax PMC 170a or the Stanton RM Three (same mixer, different manufacturer). A decent high-range mixer would be the Pioneer DJM 600 or the Allen & Heath xone series (especially the xone:62).
hope this helps ...
