Dual Monitors setup (windows 2000/xp)

I have been given the option of getting a free, used 17" screen and have the capability to add that additional screen to my set up. My current monitor is a nice iiyama 19" vision master that I have at 1600x1200 @ 72hz.

Im wondering, if I get this new monitor - will it also have to be set at 1600x1200 @ 72 hz? I doubt it can handle that kind of resolution sadly and Im not willing to sacrifice that on my big monitor either. Any help?

not sure how that work, but i have seen screenshots of peoples desktop that have 2 monitors with 1 of them having lower rez so it should work in some way i think

my microsoft course book doesnt mention resolutions - a good thing for my exam, a bad thing for my real world needs - but then whats new there then eh?

All I know is that each monitor has a reference map drawn up on it - top left being 0,0 and your mouse is mapped using that. I know you need two cards (AGP, PCI), and I know it can be done ... but so far even the almighty Google cant give me a resolution answer :(

Just had a look at my Geforce4 settings for you, because I am soo nice :haha:

What type of GFx card You got ?

NVidia Drivers do allow two monitors to be connect with different resolutions and refresh rates. You can change this option when you right click on your desktop to look at your Display Properties.

Yes you can do different resolutions on each monitor. Also, if you do this, get this : http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/

shouldn't be a problem at all. DO IT! It's the only way to work. Made the switch 2 years ago and I could never go back...

I have a duall 19 inch monitor setup and you can have a diefferent resolution running on each one. And I am using an old ATi grapfic card and use the provided Hydravison software. Card cost me 98 bucks new cdn at the store.. It's more than enough for music software.. Like Xls wrote fiew posts up, once you made a switch you'll nver wont to get back. It's so much better having two screens

found out the other monitor is only a 60hz jobby, and its only a 15" screen. Not as keen now.

For future reference, tweakheads website has a good article on dual monitor set up in a studio environment.

It will still be better than a single monitor setup.
