Idiot questions about samples...

After getting sufficiently annoyed with my softsynths, I figure it's probably time to start using some samples.
Except I wouldn't know what the hell to do with a sample if I downloaded one. If you use Buzz, and could tell me, that'd be just great.
Also, I wondered about getting my own samples for certain things... How would I do that? Just record the instrument playing a note? Then what?
Help appreciated,

I use buzz off and on, we have kind of a love/hate relationship.
To use samples you'll need to use a sampler, generally speaking it will take whatever waveform you give it and tweak it however you tell it. So for example, you could record yourself singing 2nd C below middle and then send it to a sampler and have it pitch up your voice 2 octaves to get a middle C.
Depending on what format the sampler takes, the generally accepted method of getting samples into a virtual sampler is by way of Wave or AIFF files, depending on your OS. Sometimes you need to run them through a special program so your sequencer can use the samples - for instance, in Reason if you want to use a sample through the Rex player you need to process the initial sample in Recycle first.
Btw, noticed you live in Irvine. I went to UCI last year...you don't go there by any chance do you? |

Press F9 in buzz and that will bring you to the screen you need to use to import samples into the program. You'll have to set up your samples directory in the Preferences screen beforehand so you can access the samples.
Once you've selected some samples and put them into your track (highlight them and press the Left arrow button), you'll need to use a machine to play then. Add a new Generator, and select the Matilde Tracker. From there, go to the pattern editor and create your pattern with whatever samples you want with the Mtrk selected. |

Great, thanks guys. This'll really help.
Tranc3: I do go to UCI. Second year, engineering. Bored as heck. That's partly why I got into this.
Are there any good clubs or anything in the area? I can't seem to find any..
