Any have any advice on using stabs correctly.

After my buildup I want an explosion on the the first beat of the hook with a crash cymbal aswell, but the samples I'm using just takes up all the frequency. I can eq the cymbal nicely, but for it too stand out, I've had to remove all the lower frequencies, kinda makes it lose its whack!

Any1 know a gud way to eq these sort of samples, or an alternative way of creating these i.e. synths, different samples, filtering etc.

If any1 can help, I'd b so appreciative.
hey cheggy
Have you tried using eq to trim the frequencies. Cut out the frequencies above and below the sweet spot that don't really make much difference to the sound. This should clear up some room for the other sounds in the mix. Also, have a look for some better samples if they aren't doing the job. If you eq crap, you will only end up with eq'd crap. The Dorumalaia ones in the superdrum 8000 group were quite nice.

Well if you have a big boom in there playing at the same time then you should be able to just highpass the Cymbal. Personally I almost always HP my cymbals at 2000+.

and reverb effect too! BTW: good topic! Troubles here too :) But I'm using some Sample CD cymbal for ages and this one works for me. I cant change it because other cymbals just suck :) I use cymbal and some heavy reverbed "boooom" effect same time.

Reverb helps to make the tail bigger, but it won't effect the whoomp...
I guess the thing you have to work with are compressors. Put a high attack on them, to make the whack more obvious. Experiment until you are satisfied. Than eq the cymbal and you will have more room for other sounds, without losing the whack of the sample.
