Cubase SX 2 / JP-8080 problem.

Hello,
I just got my JP-8080 (yeah!), but I'm having a slight problem in Cubase SX 2. When I go to "add midi device," it seems they have a ton of synths, but not the JP-8080 (or JP-8000) listed. I've set it up now where I've just added it as "new device", and it works, but a lot of the functionality that comes with the presets aren't there. Should the JP-8080 be on that list (do I need to re-install), or is there someone that can send me the .xml file so I can get the functions without having to put them in manually, or do I just need to sit my ass down and program then all in? Thanks! |

Is this a new function that comes with Cubase SX version 2, because I use SX.1 and I've got no ing idea what you're talking about.
Don't you just select the midi output that runs to the jp and then automate it with the dials on the jp. I'm kinda lost. Could you explain to me what you're trying to do here. |

It's just an easy way to store patches, as far as I know. If you go to Device -> Midi Device Manager, you can install a Midi device, and then use it to store patches, etc. I just don't feel like trying to program in all the patches that are on there. Figured someone might have done it already. I'm having a hell of a time getting Cubase to automate anything except for notes. I haven't searched yet on here though, and I haven't put that much time into it yet. Do you have any tips or links?
Thanks |

Oh, okay. I thought it was about something else. I normally just use the bank and patch numbers rather than names.
As for automation, you need to have the midi out of the jp going into a midi in on your computer. Then, create a midi channel in Cubase and set the input as whatever input the jp midi out comes in on.
Then record enable the midi track you have just created. Then, say you want to automate freq cutoff, hit record (make sure it is the only channel record enabled, obviously) and turn the cutoff nob as required. It should start coming up on the screen everytime you turn the dial. For each parameter you want to automate, do it on a sepereate channel. That way you can see all the automation at once. That's how I do it at least, although there are other ways. I just like to control the automation with my hands rather than the mouse, which is why I use this method.
Hope that helps. |

| Thanks for the reply. I think I have it hooked up okay, as far as I know. When I move any of the knobs or sliders, the little red MIDI indicator bar goes up and down, but I can't get it to automate to a MIDI track. I tried making a MIDI track to control the notes I play along with automation of sliders, etc. but that didn't work. Then I tried making a seperate MIDI channel for the notes and automation, but that also doesn't work. I'm having a hard time figuring out why the MIDI indicator bar moves with the knobs, but I can't automate it. It seems as if Cubase is getting info from the JP, but it won't let me record it. I'll keep trying... |

| Well, now I'm half-way there. I can automate the sliders, as long as I draw them in. If I try to put them in manually (on the JP) as it plays, it works for about a second, and then it looks like it starts feeding back or something. The MIDI input bar just keeps bouncing up and down, even when I'm not touching anything, and I have to switch to another MIDI port for it to stop. So, basically it won't work with me actually moving the dials. It just doesn't make sense to me that it appears as if its sending the proper MIDI signals until I record, and then it starts feeding back. Oh well, I figured my first hardware synth setup would be a little difficult... |

| this really isnt a reply to your question, just saying nice buy and enjoy the synth! cant wait to hear some of the stuff u make with it. |

| Kind of had the same problem when I left the midi-in as 'all midi outputs' using my midi controller. Have you tried selecting 'generic remote control' for MIDI in ? |

Okay all you MIDI wizzes...here's what's going on. Right now I have my MIDI controller hooked up to my computer via USB. I have the MIDI OUT of my soundcard hooked up to the KEYBOARD MIDI IN on the JP-8080. The MIDI out of the JP-8080 then goes to the MIDI IN of my controller keyboard.
In Cubase, I have the MIDI IN as the contoller keyboard (emulated) and the MIDI OUT as the JP-8080 (actually the MIDI OUT port of my soundcard). This allows me to play the JP just fine, and I can record it to an audio track if I want. I can also sequence notes into the MIDI track, and they playback on the JP just fine as well.
The difficulty comes in automation. For some reason, I cannot record automations in this setup. I have to switch the MIDI OUT in Cubase to a different controller keyboard input. I'm using the PCR-80 and I have to switch from the PCR 1 setting to the PCR MIDI IN setting. With this I get no sound, but I can manually write in knob and filter changes. The only thing is when I do it on the JP while recording, the MIDI signal just gets stuck to "on" and I have to switch to another MIDI input to get it to stop.
I think it has something to do with sending multiple channels of info instead of a single channel from my controller keyboard, but I'm not sure. Here's hoping someone can figure this out for me.
Thanks. |

JP-8080 midi out --> Midi Controller Midi in ???? That's an interesting one.
Why don't you try
Midi Controller USB out --> Computer USB in
Computer Midi out --> JP midi in
JP midi out --> Computer midi in
That might make things work a little better. The keyboard and the jp are different devices and should be running on different midi lines. |

>> I have to switch the MIDI OUT in Cubase to a different controller keyboard input.
Should that not be MIDI IN
following on from cheggy ....
goto menu -> select device -> device setup
@ All MIDI inputs -> enable USB Audio Device (emulated)
@ All MIDI inputs -> enable MIDI in from JP
@ Default MIDI Ports -> selected All for MIDI In
@ Default MIDI Ports -> selected JP for MIDI Out
test your keys by switching Midi In to USB Device on the project/track thingy
test your knobs by switching Midi In to your SoundCard Midi In on the project/track thingy
.... and if that works then you might be able to select 'All MIDI in' from the project inspector thingy and play with your keys and your knobs at the same time ... oo-err |
