While it's not my favorite way to mix as I prefer mellow, I can say mellow does'nt exactly draw a crowd out here. But Marcos Red Bullet, & Digital Pressure Aftershock are'nt too hard; but Alphazone is definetly as hard as it comes. But you are right, it pretty much depends on who you play after; as most of the hardcore people come on before me at gigs, I pretty much usually have to start hard, and end light. I tried doing it the other way around once, and it did'nt get a good reaction from the crowd!
I would prefer to do it like you suggest, start light and build the peaks around the 4/5 song cause thats how I mix at home, but when I play out thats not usually the way it gets to go.
Maybe if I get to play opening set one day I'll get to do it my way though!

But starting too light can be a bad thing, cause if you don't get the crowd going usually in the first 30 min. of your set. Then your gonna spend the rest of your time using songs you had planned for later, to get their attention back.

True,
If you are playing out then it is all relative to what was played before you that's for sure. Not to mention where you are playing and what the music policy is.
As a closing DJ you don't actually have to drop off towards the end. You need to make an assesment of how 'battered' people actually look and indeed are. This will give you an indication as to their energy levels.

If you start too lite then the chances are that you are not playing someting that is relative to the night anyways. Also as you well know, it is all about who you have infront of you and I can't fault you for doing what you do as you know the people you play for better than I do.

If you are the first DJ on though, I would say if you blast an empty dancefloor then you just look stupid. That's where the build up needs to come.

^^Seriously but it's not really the Dj's fault, out here it's primarily that most of the promoters out here, don't know what their doing. And primarily are usually just in it for the money, so arranging your booked dj's into a good lineup is'nt exactly concerning them unfortunately. I've played at parties where the promters had progressive/ NRG Dj's come on after Hard trance Dj's and it just sounds whacked, cause I usually would make it the other way around. But thats just part of the ty Dj., and party politics out here.

I try to start out my sets with something that doesn't just drop right into a beat, whenever possible.

A couple of examples that spring to mind:

Solar Stone - Solarcoaster (yes, I know, sort of old at this point...)

Argonout - Don't Wake Me Up

The latter of the two is personally one of my favorite tracks currently. I really like the mood of it, because it works well with either continuing on with more mellow stuff, or building into something a bit more euphoric (as I did in my Feb 7th set).

Kristine W - Save My Soul (Gabriel & Dresden Mix)
Dumonde - Human (Dave 202 & Phil Green Rmx)
Dj Tiesto - Magik Journey
Ayumi Hamasaki - Whatever (Ferry Corsten Dub)
Ascension - Someone (Binary Finary Remix)
Aria - Dido (Armin van Buuren's Universal Religion Mix) :whip:
Andain - Summer Calling (Josh Gabriel Remix)

I wouldn't worry too much about the age of some tracks. Some stand the test of time.
I still drop Solar Factor - 'Urban Shakedown' quite often. One of my all time favourites it has to be said. Admittedly not at the beggining of a night but it's often there.

I like to start my sets somewhat progressive... Unless I am spinning a Hard House set... But I don't really have the option of playing out in a club yet, so i can start a set however I want without worrying about a crowd (YET!! ;) )

Some of the Tracks I have used lately to open a set have been:

1. Rank 1 - Breathing (Pushs Dub Mix)
2. PVD - Time of our Lives (PVD's Club Mix)
3. Scumfrog - Music Revolution (Extended Club Mix)
4. Coast 2 Coast - Searching (C2C Remix)
5. Motivation - Para Mi (Intrique Deep Bass Attack Mix)

Not all of those are Progressive like I mentioned, but I like to use them to open up a mix.. but I also don't have to worry about a crowds reaction as of yet... :(

Cheers.

a few times ive dropped in an acapella for fun as the opening. if there are 3 decks in the club (at home i use 2), DECK 1 is playing some faint bg music (sometimes i use saints & sinners - peace michael woods mix, or some ambient sounds), DECK 2 is playing the acapella (i often use blaze feat. palmer brown - my beat) and DECK 3 has a song with a hard beat that kicks in right at a certain part of the acapella

(in this case, its when the guy says "can you dance to my beat?" and then BAM! it starts) i did this twice in two different clubs after a dj finished a really hard set. ahh it sent the place screaming :)

That track isn't that old, is it? It's still bomb and I'd play it anyday. I love this track 'cuz the synth play is awesome. It makes you feel like something is building. It almost feels as if you were on a rollercoaster and moving. This track is an awesome teaser. I wouldn't open up with it but it'd be a nice transitional piece.

nice list!

i actually own most of them. LOL

i like to start off my sets with something that'll get people's attention but also go sorta along with the flow of the set before me. then i bring in the real good stuff.

don't always like starting off with a track that's too powerful but it can't be boring either.

also depends on the kind of music you play.

I guess I partially meant overplayed, but I suppose I could be wrong on that one.

On a related note, I was reluctant to buy Motorcyle - As the Rush Comes, but I really liked the "Armin Van Buuren Universal Religion Remix" when I listened to it in the vinyl shop.

Part of what I mean here is that I make an effort to buy tracks that haven't been overheard locally. There's a lot of stuff you can't avoid though, because they are both good and popular.

Hopefully this post made some sense. :)
