Please criticise my song

Here's my first trance song produced on the computer. I've been writing trance for about a year (on a MC-505), and have been on the computer for about 4 months.

Please let me know what you think, or if you have tips / criticisms etc.! In particular, this was a bitch to mix - the next one should be a lot easier i hope!

Wow, not bad, sounds pretty good. Umm, the sine lead doesn't have quite enough resonance. The breakdown synth is a little thin, but just a little. Like the chord changes. I like the bass especially after the breakdown. I think some elements could be added but overall it's great. Keep at it. At around 5:50 and probably elsewhere, the lead sounds a little too high, but it's tricky because of the other elements I realize. I think if you put the lead an octave lower and surgically eq it it will sound more pro.

thx heaps for the encouragement! I might try and beef up the breakdown synth a bit, but after that i'm really itching to get onto the next song.

i'm glad you liked the bass, it took me ages to make the headroom for it in the mix - lots of cuts here and there at 200Hz seemed to do the trick. and thx to the TA forums for that tip!
hey cheggy
Yeah man, sounds nice. At times it was a little muddy sounding though. Nice synths and a catchy melody. In the future, post in the amature producers forum.

Nice ... kick sounds a little bit low with headphones on. Its Late here :) Hmm .. no its not the kick (just took headphones off) ... its the synth you have got panned hard right and left at the beginning, it seems to be over powering the mix a bit

I like the lead part ... reminds me of Depeche Mode for some reason :)

I HATE IT! WHAT A WORTHLESS WASTE OF CRAP!

j/k.. u asked us to criticize right?? ;)
i'll give it a listen later when i'm home

btw.. as cheggy said.. wrong forum m8

yeah, sorry about posting in the wrong thread, i actually did post it in the amateur music production forum too, i guess i just wanted to be heard! (btw, i got more responses in this thread... go figure)

thanks heaps for listening, and giving your feedback! Next tune i'll definitely be a lot more careful about choosing and creating sounds up-front, instead of trying to fit them in the mix later on.

hello
fellow 505-user
pretty nice track you got there. I'd do some work on the lead (unless you got it out of the 505 then that ll be the fattest you can go I think). Needs some mixing and mastering. After the melody kicks in the beat is too weak imo

good track man.. kick could use alot more boost.. its really flat compress it like hell ;D

Very good for a first track.

Continue at it!

thanks guys, i really appreciate you listening and giving your feedback.

i totally agree about the drums. i did try compressing the kick drum with the bass synth on one buss, but it's really hard to get right. loads of practice i guess!

also i'm unsure about good ways to compress drums - there's so many options for routing tracks together : would you recommend

1 ) one buss for kick / bass synth + compress
one buss for all the hats / snare + compress
2 ) one buss for all drums + compress
3 ) compress individual tracks where they need it?

DeZmA
I wouldn't compress all the drums together.. Compress the beat on a proper compressor to get the punchier sound. You don't need compression if it sounds allready good ,don't overcompress your track (seems to be in these days) so go for option 3

DeZmA - to answer your earlier post, i didn't do anything on the 505, it's all vsts (v-station tau pro etc.). i love playing hands-on 505, but it's just so much easier to arrange a track and get lush sounds on the pc. The MC is great for playing live at parties too!

Do you still get into the 505 these days?
