DEVIANT + JUGOE @ MODA
cleveland, ohio
When we were told that we could have Moda all to ourselves for Valentine's Day, we knew that it was something special. No, not because Deviant's huge noggin gets to be on a flyer. Because the local scene is finally getting the spotlight at Cleveland's super-club. And you can be darned tootin' that we're not going to sell out with some house remix of a Justin Timberlake track. It's time for school. Put on the scuba gear, kids. We're goin' deep.
Deviant, aka David Christopher, began playing his trippy, deep progressive-house sound in 1998 at venues all over New York City, including Vinyl (now Arc), Limelight, Roxy, Cheetah, Chaos, W8TH, Speeed (now Shelter), Leopard Lounge, and many more, while also rocking events in upstate New York, Connecticut, Ohio, and Miami’s Winter Music Conference.
In 2003, following a move to Cleveland, Ohio, David's late-night sound served him well as the closing DJ for Sean Cusick, Steve Porter, Hybrid, John Howard, Jerry Bonham, Mazi, Randall Jones, and Thomas Penton. David keeps it going in 2004 with opening sets for Sandra Collins, Max Graham, Austin Leeds, and Micro. He was also named Best Club DJ in Scene Magazine's 2003 Best of Cleveland Reader Poll.
Along the way, David founded HeadRush Music, a promotions company that pioneered the use of online and e-mail marketing in New York City. Now based in Ohio and with the addition of partner Amy Dana, HeadRush Music has expanded beyond promotions to be a company at the forefront of dance-music culture, helping to educate, enlighten, entertain, and spread the gospel about the scene. David is a monthly resident at Abbasso in Cleveland, where HeadRush Music helps to lead a movement to revive Cleveland nightlife and push the sounds of progressive house.
Despite his busy schedule, David has never forgotten about his first love: producing original music. A producer at heart, David has been making music since 1992, long before he ever stepped up to a turntable. David and Amy are working hard on HeadRush Music's forthcoming label, Toes In The Sand, with the first release in February 2004 by rising Colorado talent Michael Lanning with a remix by Thomas Penton. The release has already been played throughout the world and charted by Nick Warren, Dave Seaman, Jerry Bonham, Fred Numf, Kasey Taylor, and others. Future releases include tracks by Kingkade, Jas, and Brahma.
Of course, the local scene would not be properly represented without an opening set by one of the stalwarts of Cleveland nightlife, Jugoe of the immortal Nitty Gritty crew. Yes, Jugoe at Moda. And it's about time. You may never see such balls exhibited at Moda again, so don't miss your date with history. And don't forget to get your sweetie-pie something nice. It is Valentine's Day, after all.
