i am a newbie to mixing and hail from the sunny downunder. i have hit a very tight spot at the moment coz i seem to have no idea what new equipment to buy. i have knowledge in music and the like but no idea in dj equipment (except that mk2's are cool). anyway i was hoping all the generous tranceaddicts out there might be able to help out the next big thing in aus! here is my intentions and money resitrictions which i hope will help:

--mainly beat mixing and spinning funky house/trance/house
--would like to experiment with some scratching but it isnt the highest priority
--small home and party use
--beginner use (although have enough money for intermediate gear)
--multiple channels (2 turntables, laptop, cd deck and keyboard)
--the best quality gear you think is possible for the following prices

US$250 or 131 pounds or around AUD$300 for the decks

US$200 or 104 pounds or around AUD$250 for the mixer

US$60 or around AUD$100 for cartridges

also does anyone know of any cheap and reliable online equipment stores?

i must sound like a complete newbie but i felt this was the best place to ask this kind of info

ANY info would be helpful

thanks heaps!

mmm....

You've not got a lot to go on(money wise).

My suggestion to u would be to save up more money and buy a second hand set of technics(or a new set).

When starting out most people buy cheap but im sure a lot of people would agree with me when i say don't buy cheap just because your starting out. If you get a set of technics and learn using technics then you will develope ur skill a lot faster than you would by using a cheap set.

Mixer's not really that important as long as it's got the 3 band eq's on it. U should be able to pic up a mixer pretty cheap. Once u develope ur skill u can upgrade ur mixer.

Spending just $125 on decks is going to leave you with some pretty crappy decks...

Seriously man save your money, you don't want the kinda garbage you'd get for that amount of money. "BE PATIENT & SAVE UP YOUR MONEY". Atleast until you can afford either Technics, or Vestax. If you can't save up for new ones, then check Ebay for some used tables! I'm sure anybody else will agree, it would be better for you to save your money and get either Technics, or Vestax. You'll be much happier, and progress much faster if you do!

I see this time and time again, new aspiring DJs with a limited budget trying to get some gear together, yet forgetting that records cost about $10/each. And it really is no fun playing the same five tracks over and over again... DJing is an expensive hobby, if you have to go cheap on your gear how do you think you can afford vinyl?

I agree with everyone above me. Save up for some good equipment.

Besides, buying cheap equipment will get you frustrated after a while, and try to sell your cheap-ass turntables for a good price... :(. You'll find that is pretty much impossible.

If you buy some good stuff (Techs :D ) now, and you don't like dj-ing, you can always sell your techs for a good price. There are people who sold their technics for the same price they bought them for....

DJ-ing is fun, but also very expensive. If you don't have the money to afford it, it will be hard to get the maximum fun out of it.

Just my 2 cents.

yea.... definitely get the technics. i actually sold my original technics for more money and bought 2 m3d's for even cheaper. now i have enough money from the trade to upgrade my mixer as well. basically techs are always worth money, so you dont have to worry about selling.

Anything but belt-drive!!!

Ok, now that I said that, I want to tell you my story. A few months ago, I had your same problem, i had only $700 to spend on my gear, and I started seaching in the internet for great deals and I got to the point where I was going to buy a turntable package. DON'T DO THAT. Fortunately, I went to Chicago during the holidays and I was decided to go and buy some gear, well, I got a pair of Numark's TT-200 (which are very good) and a Behringer mixer, but I had a problem with customs (since I live here in México...) and if I wanted to keep my gear, Iwould have to pay another $200 bucks. So I decided to take back my gear and get back my money, and I did. In that moment, I realized that I had to SAVE and SAVE and SAVE. Now I've got more than $1500 and in approx. 3 weeks I'm getting two TTX1s and a VMX300. You may thing that that's a lot of money for such gear, but as I said, I live in México, and here, a TTX goes for about $600 apiece and the VMX for $250.

Anyway I hope that you get the point, don't huury, you'll see the difference when you can spend your money on better gear.

Ok? ;)
