My apologies if you guys missed this, but it was the funniest I have seen in a long time. The interesting part is that the crowd in Toronto was laughing their asses off too...perhaps because Triumph was not making fun of the whole of Canada - just Quebec.

One of the best lines was when Triumph went up to a fat Quebecer and asked him if he was a separatist. "Perhaps you should start separating yourself from the doughnuts."

Canada Condemns 'Racist' Conan O'Brien TV Show
Fri Feb 13, 3:26 PM ET

By David Ljunggren

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's government on Friday condemned a show by U.S. late-night television host Conan O'Brien that insulted people in French-speaking Quebec and seemed to suggest everyone in the province was homosexual.

Ottawa and the province of Ontario paid $760,000 to help O'Brien -- who appears on the NBC television network -- bring his show to Toronto for a week to boost the city's profile after a deadly SARS outbreak last year.

But the federal government said O'Brien had gone far too far with the show broadcast on Thursday in which he went to Quebec, a province which has had separatist governments for much of the last 20 years and is a delicate political topic in Canada.

"We want to disassociate ourselves from the comments which were broadcast last night because we do not support them in any way," junior government minister Mauril Belanger told Parliament.

At one point in the show, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog -- a hand puppet that is a regular on the show -- said to a Quebecer: "You're French, you're obnoxious and you no speekay English." It told another: "I can smell your crotch from here."

O'Brien's team were also shown replacing street signs in the province with those that read "Quebecqueer Street" and "Rue des Pussies."

Alexa McDonough, a legislator for the left-leaning New Democrats, described the program as "racist filth" and "utterly vile" and demanded the government seek the return of the C$1 million subsidy.

"There may be those who would say, 'Isn't this interfering with freedom of expression?' It's not interfering to say we will not publicly fund this kind of vile, vicious hatemongering," McDonough told reporters.

Belanger did not commit to asking for the money back. No one at NBC was immediately available for comment.

The complaints over the puppet's comments come on the heels of a similar uproar following criticism of European French-Canadian hockey players on CBC television by the country's best-known sports commentator, Don Cherry.

The "Late Night" show, which taped in Toronto all this week and featured guests such as Jim Carrey and Mike Myers was broadcast in Canada by CHUM television, which said it regretted any offense that may have been caused.

"We offer our apology and assurance that it is never our intention to air programing that offends any of our viewers," the station said in a statement.

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog has landed in trouble before, most famously when it had an altercation with rap singer Eminem at a music awards show in 2002.

Frankly I have seen Canadian comedies when I went to school close to the border in upstate NY and it left a lot to be desired in the funny variety, its ironic however that there is a lot of complaints now but when any jokes are made of fat Americans, dumb Americans, and clearly anti-American by our neighbour to the north there is no grand uproar. Now I read of how Conan is an idiotic American, bringing his dumb filth to Canada, blah, blah. He makes as much fun of Americans, especially Southerners. Maybe Canada should start by looking deeper within itself as to why people have their undies in a bunch over this useless subject matter covered on a comedy show. Help us in the modern day PC world.

I saw the show as well - the Canadians seemed to love Conan more than the Americans. It was sad really, they had girls throwing stipping naked screaming their lungs out for him:(

I think the Canadian politicians are just envious of his fame, I believe they fear he might come and take over Canada one day.

it's not canadians, it's a select few politicans. it's no different then the american FCC saying you can't slander blacks or mexicans on american TV.

But the FCC has never said anything when Canadians slander black or mexicans on American TV (which I am sure they do on occasion, knowing Canadains).

no we just slander americans as a whole, we don't attack the racial minorites.

Is Conan O'briewn the guy with the big chin?

I've never really liked US talk show commedy, it's so blatantly contrived (although on paper that little act looked funny)

Canada is a very multicultural country, so i guess i can see why some people there would take offense, but Australia which is just as multicultural (if not more) thrives on this type of humour, but because it is also self deprecating no one takes offense.

do people actually find the Acadamy Awards funny :conf:

jay leno is the one with the big chin. conan is teh tall redhead guy.

I think we should all lighten up.

I find that many Canadians expect everyone to be in love with us and be jealous of our country. By focusing on what we do better than other people (esp. the US,) it helps us forget about our problems, of which there is no lack.

yeah
i'm from Quebec, and me i think that conan o'brien is funny...
this was not racism we do the same thing about the english from Canada...
In Quebec most of the people are really looser and just have the time to talk about other people and said that they are bad, stupid or whatever...:nervous: :nervous: :nervous:
