Holland question

I was having conversation in a bar this weekend and someone corrected me and said Holland isn't a country it's called the Netherlands, so I pull up a map and he's right.
So why does everyone refer to it as Holland? |

| Well netherland is called holland in denmark, and on any danish map i have ever seen, my guess is netherland is what holland is called in english. But im just guessing :) |

The Netherlands can be called Holland as well, it's the practicly the same. 16,3 million people packed in a man-made country.
If you wanna be specific, Holland are the two provinces alongside the coast (Noord-Holland & Zuid-Holland), which formed Holland 500 years ago. Later some more provinces were added to form the Netherlands.
Belgium used to be part of the Netherlands until the 1830's.
The Kingdom of The Netherlands is the official passport name of our country, excisting of Holland, The Netherlands Antilles and Aruba
If you say Holland, everyone knows what you're talking about. It's sounds better than the Netherlands.
Holland means 'land of wood', because of the forrests we had (not any more :p)
The Netherlands means 'The Low Lands', because 40% of our country is below sealevel.
In the 16th century, Holland had the biggest naval fleet in the world, discovering New Zealand, Indonesia, New York, The Cape etc etc.
Actually, New York would still be called New Amsterdam if we hadn't trade it with Surinam. Our museums are full of crappy paintings and stuff from that period of time ;)
So enough information, come visit us, smoke a legal joint and go visit the Red Light District. We also have the world's largest harbor (Rotterdam) and the best XTC labs in the world :toothless:
And eh... our soccer players are by far the best in Europa, maybe even the world (Kluivert, Van Nistelrooij, Makaay...)

There are approx 1200 coffeeshops in Holland, of which 400 in Amsterdam alone. Every coffeeshop has a menu of 10-30 kinds of weed and hash. You just point out what you wanna have (samples hang on the wall or under a glass table) and buy a bag (5 gram max at a time)
You just roll your joint wherever you like, in front of the policestation, who cares. Best place is the park or at a chilly coffeshop terrace.
Never buy weed or any other drugs on the street, thats plain old stupid. Dutch weed is at least 2 or 3 times stronger than average weed you buy in the States. Growing marihuana in Holland has been done professionally for over 30 years.
Lazy people get a prerolled joint for 2,50-3,50 Euro. Better make one yourself...
Prices range from 5 to 6,50 Euro a gram. Weed crystals 20 or so.
Never ever ask the coffeeshop guy for the 'strongest stuff you have'!
The best weed can contain up to 15-30% of THC, which will make you pass out immediately :p |

That would be about £3 for an 8th!!!!! (For all the english people)
Out here in rural england its £20-£25 an 8th. Cheaper in London though, not sure of prices. Now I see why people go to amsterdamn. How old do you have to be to buy weed? Cos I might just have to look up some fares on easyjet/similar. |

You have to be 18 to buy weed or enter a coffeeshop. They do check ages cause coffeeshops like to keep their licenses.
Coffeeshops pay taxes just like any other business :) |
