Hey guys,
I'm proud to announce I got a job in NYC. I start on March 1 and I plan on moving in March! I'm really happy and I can use some advice. :)
How difficult is it to find an apartment in NYC without paying a broker fee or any other expensive fee? I've been looking in easyrent.com and craigslist mostly.
I plan coming to NYC for the Feb 27 weekend to look for a place. I will be able to drop a check immediately on a place if I find one I like. My bank is citibank so I don't think any landlord has to worry about an out of state check. How tight is the market that I would not be able to find a place at least 500 sf for about $1,500 / month? I would also like to find a place where electricity is included and I would pay extra for that.
I'm not picky on where I live. Anything below 80th street and west of Avenue A should be fine. I'm looking for the best bang for my buck and is soundproofed well or where my neighbors won't mind loud music ;)
I would also like to ideally move in on or before March 12. Is this an unreasonable hope?
I don't plan on getting a land line but I do want a NYC cell number so I'm looking for a new cell company. I'm with Nextel right now and they're spotty in NYC. Can anyone recommend a cell company?
I also need an ISP that is good in NYC. Any recommendations?
How good is the cable service in NYC? I may get a DirectTV system but I don't know if the reception will be terrible with all the tall buildings.
Finally, I would like any advice from any manhattanites on moving to the city - what to expect, what you didn't realize about NYC until you moved, how you like it there :)
BTW, I will be at Paul Van Dyk and will probably go to Layo and Bushwacka the next eventing :D
Thanks! |

hrmm.. well let me cut it down.. the expenses on apartments you can find a studio place around midtown. But if you want more bang for the buck soho is a nice area and quiet place..
and soundproof eh its kinda hard to find that unless youw ant to pay extra more.. but you can put foam around the walls and it keeps the music down a bit.
if you want to move before march 12 am sure there is always a spot open but the earlier the better before the summer cuz thats when everyone starts coming in.
for cell company.. I like T-Mobile its cheap and lots of minutes its a good plan. Don't get nextel its bad.. verizon is a good one but less minutes and good service and cheaper then tmobile. But it depends how much you want to use.. you can visit the online sites and they can show you the plans.
For ISP I'd get optimum online but since your in the city your only choice is Time Warner Road Runner or a T1-T3 connetion from a company lol but thats a lot more expensive so Road runner is your only choice. It's good download speed as long as you don't mind the 50k upload maxed rate.
The cable service is good for time warner I have the 129.99 plan where I get 6 premium and all 700 channels so you get movies on deman from hbo and cinemax and showtime etc.. you can look it up on the timewarner cable site.
First time for me moving to NY and visiting the city you get sorta lost... but in a week or so you'll get the hang of it. It's really easy to find your way around and easy transportation using the buses and subways.. One thing to remember is that NYC is like a grid so its not that hard. The avenues go east and west and the Streets go north and south... The only confusing part is when you reach downtown where the streets turn into names and it criss crosses.. All ya need is a map and its easy to find your way. But hey even if you do get lost you'll gain more experience for yourself.
In my oppinion I get myself lost on purpose lol and then just find out where I am and how I get back etc.. and visit the surrounding places. It's really exciting.. and you meet a lot of new people.. hey if you want to meet up sometime I'll give ya a tour of the city I am more then willing to help out a newcomer.
I might goto PVD.. if I don't make it then I make April close to my 22nd birthday :P.. (richie am catching up to you loser lol)]
Hope it helps if ya need to know more just mail me.. I goto college in the city so am pretty much there all the time.. I just moved to NJ 20 minutes from the city so the commute is shorter.
Here is my email address if you need further instructions or advice [email protected]
hto damn its cold I Can't even think straight while typoing lolo.. afdffafa |

i would check out craigslist before you come. i have had a lot of luck in the past getting apartments through it. for $1500 a month you can get a decent studio in the east village, i dont know price other places. the east village was my favorite neighborhood in manhattan. i would think twice about what area you want to live in. it makes a big difference on your style of life.
i had verizon and the service was great. anything is cheaper than nextel.
the cable service is good, but expensive, as anywhere.
utilities are not usually that expensive... |

| For $1500 you can get a phat 1 bedroom in hoboken and take the path 10 minutes into NYC. |

| T-mobile worked nicely for me, I know someone who has Cingular and hers is fine too. |
