I'm pretty much a newb when it comes to home stereo . So, what are some excellent, mid range speakers that run about >$500 for a pair?
I randomly saw on AvB's site he has Yamaha MSP5's at his DJ booth. Do these sound good by themselves, or do they need a sub to sound really sweet? Do know that I'm an audiophile and love good sounding bass and all that good :D |

You will want to get a matching subwoofer along with the smaller speakers you end up getting. It seems like big threeway speakers with 12 or 15 inch woofers are out of vogue these days. All about the bookshelf speakers with a sub, or else a tower made with multiple 6 inch speakers. |

home stereo speakers are just that. .
what are you doing to be doing with these speakers?
if your just listening to music, maybe home audio speakers will do good for you.
but I can say that most 3-way speakers have great bass, but horrid reproduction of midrange and highs.
personally I prefer the sound of a good 2-way PA speaker. one with a low crossover point, large format horn, and a solid cabinet. they project better, and sound better at high volumes.
almost any good speaker will require a subwoofer. if a full-range speaker doesnt require a sub, it's either way too big to move, or is lacking in other areas.
lots of bass was never meant to come from a full range cabinet. |

You could get a M-Audio speakers, they have 2.1 speakers and than a 2 speaker expansion. |

Err I should have clarified: I'm going to use them for spinning first, and a bit of listening as well. My room is only about 12x16 feet so I don't need anything gigantic, but I do appreciate a good window rattling :D . |

get a good quality amp like a QSC and a couple of JBL or Yamaha 2 ways with 10 or 12" woofers, and grab like a 12" floor sub, and you'll blow the windows out of your 12x16 room |

^^ agreed
crown and crest make good amps, too :D
an easy solution would be a pair of jbl eon 10's... 10 inches, self powered, compact and easy to set up. and nearly overkill for your small room.
just about any decently clean sub will do, you wont need much bass reinforcement.
actually, i'd get the speakers first, and then decide if you even need the sub. |
