Just wondering if some of you Dj's could give me some advice on mixing, such as where to bring in the second record, counting beats (how many beats before you bring it in), and any other techniques. Thanks for all your help. Take care

well for starters, when you think the records are beatmatched, i tend to find the first starting beat of the track and backcue just before it, then move the vinyl back and forth by hand to 'feel' where the starting beat is. then i usually wait till the end of the 4th measure (usually a multiple of 16, ie 16/32) and on the starting point of the next, drop it in and if you do it properly you shouldnt need to cue back or forward much to get it perfectly in time. then at the start of the next measure, start bringing up the volume on it, and at the next measure, a little more. then just fade out the other vinyl that was playing :D
I find different vinyl need to be mixed differently though, as some dont have enough time at the start to mix in for a long period of time, on the other hand some vinyl's have huge intros so you have more time to fade in/out.
keep in mind im new to mixing too so mabye dont take what i say too seriously ;) |

| I think it would be really cool if someone explained step-by-step how to mix. Do you beatmatch first, then just wait for when you want to drop the second song? Do you always start the second song from the beginning, even though you don't start to bring it in until, say, 1 minute into it? someone who has the time and patience please reply, it would really help me when I get my TTs. |

Most songs you'll notice have 2 major buildups... the first one, then after the first one the song kinda plateau's up high into the second buildup.... after the second buildup the melody dies and its just a fade-out beat... usually right when this starts you throw your other record into play...
I usually beatmatch first (can't imagine any other way to do it), and then like i said, RIGHT when the second peak finishes its good to have the beginning beat from your 2nd record already mixing in with the trailing beat from your current record...
and sometimes it turns out sooooo good, its just dumb luck! heheh, good luck though! :D

| thanks for the reply, but i was actuall wanting a more technical description. I already mix on the computer and know where it sounds best (at least where I think it sounds best) to mix a song in. What I want to know is along the lines of what sektile began to descibe, except from start to finish. |

to quickly answer your question KristineClub. i personally ALWAYS start my second vinyl right at the starting point. most trance tunes start with a very basic beat and gradually add more into it until it of course hits a peak, then dies down and does it again, with most trance tunes having 2 peaks. so this way by starting the second vinyl right at the start, you have a longer time to mix in before the tune gets too complicated. or atleast that's how i see it.. maybe djdawn could comment :)
there are some exceptions of course... or atleast for me as im a newbie :) for example members of mayday - 10 in 01 [original mix] starts with a 'hum' .. no beats .. without beats i cant mix. so i have to cue it up at the starting point of the beats. but thats me as a newbie.. maybe more experienced dj's could possibly do it.
some comments from some more experienced dj's might be good :) dont want to lead you on the wrong path |
