Can't remember the last time I used a cross-fader for anything other than scratching... needless to say I don't do it in my sets.
The cross-fader is kind of a 'hang around' from the 80's mixers when you had a lot of mobile discos and similar who had very unskilled DJs.
I think it's a shame they are still there sometimes as they get a lot of young DJs using it and it's not really helping.
You will have more control over a mix by using Gain and up faders.
Cheers

Nem i hope you dont mea that you would want to get rid of crossfaders all-together!?
i know they aint used much by most people but there are times they are better.
example-how easy is it to instantly cut to 2nd tune or even switch 25% one 75% other using channel faders? i know i would have problems trying it with channel fades compaired with crossfade. |

Its easier to cut smoothly using the faders if you know how.
even when mixing drum n bass, garage or scratching i still use the channel faders....Much much more control and no dip from the curve.
In fact i do not know one professional dj who does use it- in any style-with the exception of turntablism.
I think i used the X fader once......a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away... |

| When I first started mixing I tried out the crossfader a bit, didn't like it, so I exclusively use the channel faders (well, and EQ/gain too of course). |
