Red Bull (pg. 5)

Caffeine and alcohol do not have any significant hazardous interactions. The combination may cause minor nausea or discomfort in some individuals, but on a neurological level the two substances don't really interact much because they produce their effects through different mechanisms - alcohol affects voltage- or ligand-gated ion channels, while caffeine inhibits A1 and A2A adenosine receptors. So don't sweat it if you like to mix Red Bull with alcohol, it's not going to do anything to you.

we're talking about alcohol and caffeine here not k and coke. |
And? Something is either a drug or it isnt. Caffeine is not a particularly powerful stimulant, so usually wont cause too many problems when taken with other drugs as long as the dose isnt too high, but alcohol is as hard a drug as they come.
Saying an upper and downer will cancel each other out is basically saying taking both together is safer than either alone, when the opposite of that is true. |

1 Shot of jagermeister + 1 shot of vodka + 1 can of redbull.
Have about 4 of those before you go out ;) |

r u serious. you think that just b/c they act on two different things in the body they dont ever interact. have you never taken any biochemisrty.
| quote: | | Caffeine is a stimulant and consumption with alcohol, a depressant, does not negate alcohol's effects, said Paul Doering, UF professor of pharmacology. A high dose of caffeine is unsafe because it speeds up heart rate and makes the cardiovascular system work harder, he said. Also, they can contribute to worsening one's hangover because when drugs are mixed there is often a synergistic effect instead of one plus one equaling two, said Tavis Glassman of the Campus Drug and Alcohol Resource Center. |

The reason mixing red bull (stimulant) with alcohol (depressant) isnt recommended, because it allows you to take more than you might normally take. So a few drinks with red bull is ok but not a lot.
Its like taking handful of sleeping pills with a handful of vivrian. |

The two drugs have not been demonstrated to interact in any significant harmful way - and it's not due to any lack of research on the issue.

Look at how weak these claims are. Paul Doering really "goes out on a limb" to say that "[caffeine] does not negate alcohol's effects." But given that they don't affect the same neurological processes to begin with, one wouldn't really expect it to. He goes on to say that "a high dose of caffeine is unsafe because it speeds up heart rate and makes the cardiovascular system work harder." What he doesn't tell you is that you'd have to take a greater than triple dose of caffeine pills in order to raise your heart rate the same amount as nicotine - and you don't see smokers keeling over from cardiac arrest left and right. And, of course, caffeine pills contain far more caffeine than you'd get from a beverage like Red Bull. If you take a high enough dose of water, or oxygen, it can kill you. The statement "a high dose of [substance] is unsafe" is true for any substance on Earth, provided that you conveniently neglect to define what constitutes a "high dose."
And yes, it can contribute to worsening one's hangover because both alcohol and caffeine are mild diuretics. However, there is a simple cure for this, and it's pretty easy to get your hands on: water. That can hardly be considered a serious side effect, by any standard. And yet these are just about the strongest claims that you can find to indicate any harm from combining caffeine and alcohol. But they're all just full of hot air - there's no substance behind these claims. It's the same kind of pseudoscience people use to try to blame obesity on the fast food industry, and it's an absolute disgrace to the scientific method. These people need to stop deciding what is bad and then trying to find evidence to support it, and just take objective observations and conduct meaningful experiments to determine what might be harmful and what isn't. It's ridiculous that these people have PhDs but they don't even remember the scientific method that they were supposed to learn in fourth grade.
The bottom line is that there isn't any scientifically valid evidence to suggest that mixing caffeine and alcohol is dangerous. There's plenty of conjecture, absurd claims, and mindless sensationalism. But there isn't any science to it.

| Well, now I can give a first hand experience of what it's like when you mix 4 beers, 2dl of wine, 0.5dl of schnapps, 5 red bulls, and a bottle of aromatic oil. Aside from having a pleasant smell in your mouth, you really have a lot of energy and all the effects of being drunk except the stomach problems and loss of energy. But I did feel like I was going to fall unconcious at one certain moment so I won't do that anymore. |
